Ballard, Donald Greg
Donald Greg Ballard, beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle, passed away on January 17, 2016. Greg was born in Tokyo, Japan February 8, 1953. Growing up in a military family, he found himself settling in Phoenix Arizona with his two sisters Mary Ballard and Donna Dundas (Bob). Greg attended Moon Valley High School and received a Bachelors in Chemistry at ASU. He met the love of his life, Maureen, as her scuba instructor in 1977. In true Greg fashion he proposed underwater, leading to two wonderful daughters, Marie and Anne. Greg spent 26 years as a Forensic Scientist with the Phoenix Police Department Crime Lab. After retirement he taught forensic science at Scottsdale Community College. Greg's passions included scuba diving, ham radios, playing the bagpipes, motorcycles, traveling, teaching, studies of science and space, and laughing. Greg was fun, passionate, eternally curious, sincere, honest, and had an infectious zest for life. He was genuinely fun to be around and made Maureen and his girls laugh every day. Greg is also survived by his nieces Angela, Maura, and Sara and nephews, Matthew, Tim, Evan and Aaron. Services will be held at the Irish Cultural Center, located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Sunday the 24th, 2016 at noon. Donations to the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute will continue Greg's legacy of scientific contribution. Donations can be made at http://www.teamseti.org/.

What can I say about my buddy Greg. Friends for so many years. Had to debate if he was good enough for Maureen to marry. Our kids grew up camping together. So many trips together. Getting seperated back in the day before cellphones, when the C.B. whould only reach so far, and meeting up by chance walking down the street 400 miles away. Trying to find our lost kids at the lake. Putting out the tire fire on my trailer with shaken up Diet Coke cause thats all we had left. Teaching him and Maureen about dirty baby diapers on the beach in the front seat of the Camaro we were diving out of. The great trips to Ireland, Mexico, Hawaii and around
AZ & California. So many great times and afew that were not, but always great memorys. And what a beautiful Family dealing with so much pain. Know that with the passing of time the pain will lesson and the memorys will grow. At this sad sad time I give you my Love and support. Rest In Peace my friend and blow those pipes for the Lord till we all join you.

I was so saddened to hear the news about Greg. I was one of the "interviewers" when he was hired as a professor at Scottsdale Community College and I knew right away that he would be a wonderful teacher. He was so much fun to be around. I retired and moved away but he always stayed in touch and had such a great sense of humor. My prayers are with his family.

Knowing Greg from Ft. Benning, GA to Germany to Ft. Hood, TX as a child and then when my sister and I got to see him in 2012 as a grown man, you could see what an amazing person he was. There aren't enough words to console the family but may God give you peace..

Maureen, it was so sad to see Greg's obituary in the newspaper, today. I know you both from Scuba Sciences. I was Bud Short's significant other for many years before he passed in 2003. Greg was a super fellow. Bud and I both thought very highly of both of you. Lots of fun, as mentioned. I remember many Scuba Sciences Christmas parties, and club meetings. Greg was always a cut up. I was totally impressed when I found out he was a forensic scientist. I know you all will miss him. My sincere sympathies are with you and your family. Celebrate his life!

I had the privilege (Greg would laugh at this) of working with Greg, Randy, Dick Watkins and so many more people at the Phoenix PD Crime Lab for 3 years. I never saw Greg not smiling or cracking a joke. It is hard for me to realize he is gone. He drove to Prescott to attend the memorial of my husband in June, 2009.I told him how much I appreciated it and he said, "how could I not? You were like our sister." I will always miss you Greg.
