Donald Stiles Obituary

Stiles, Donald George
83, died December 8, 2009 at his home in Desert Mountain, Scottsdale, Arizona. Mr. Stiles was born September 3, 1926 in Brownville Junction, Maine, son of the late Grace & George Stiles, preceded in death by his beloved wife Carolyn of 51 years, son David Alan and brother William W. He graduated from Brownville Junction High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and also enjoyed hunting and the outdoors of his adored Maine. Don also served in the Army Air Corps near the end of WWII. While visiting Cleveland Ohio, he met and married his late wife Carolyn R. McFarlin. Settling in Cleveland, he graduated from Fenn College of Engineering. Moving to Bay Village, Ohio to raise their family, they later moved to Medina, Ohio and wintered at their home in Water Glades, Singer Island, Florida. At Carolyn's passing, he moved to a second winter home in Palm City, Florida and later in Scottsdale, Arizona. As a young ambitious man, Don had jobs with the local school system and railroad stoking boilers and later painting train trestles. In 1956 he co-founded Webb-Stiles Co. of Valley City, Ohio. While growing this young company, he provided unselfishly for his family and employees. Expanding in 1975 to Gadsden, Alabama he retired as president in 1993, yet maintained an advising role till his passing. His interests included family, friends, fishing, boating, golf, cards and flying. He played soft ball in an over 65 Old Timers League. Mostly, he enjoyed his morning crossword puzzles and Sudoku's. He loved people, making friends easily and endearing himself to so many. Mr. Stiles is survived by his loving daughter Sandi (Mike) Matthews of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and son Donald Jr. "Hap" (Martha) of Medina, Ohio. He was a devoted grandpa to his grandchildren, Lori (Joe) Palumbo of Keller, Texas; Stacey (Mat) Truman of Lakewood, Colorado; David Gwynn of Englewood, Colorado; Meghan (John) Lisi of Pueblo West, Colorado; Lisa Dean of San Diego, California; Melissa (Josh) Beaudette of Parker, Colorado; Michelle Stiles of Brunswick, Ohio and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Alex Palumbo, Zach, Justin, Cameron, Tyler, and Gracie Truman, Jakob and Grant Lisi and Lauren Dean. Friends and family may call on Friday, December 18, from 4-7PM at Waite & Son Funeral Home, 3300 Center Road, Brunswick, Ohio 44212. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 19, at 10 AM again at Waite & Son Funeral Home, Brunswick. Don's favorite charity was the Salvation Army and in these difficult economic times, in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his name to Salvation Army of Medina, 425 W. Liberty St., Medina, Ohio 44256 or your local branch of choice.

I will forever enjoy the days of softball. We won a championship with Jay Nagy leading the way. But I especially enjoyed the beers after the game with you and Jay Nagy.

Having been a Webb-Stiles employee for 11 yrs. I appreciated all that Mr. Stiles did for his employees. I'll be forever in his and Hap's debt. It was a great experience knowing them both.

To Don's Family,
We'll think of Don every time we pass the old Rusted Railroad tressell in Greenville Jct. Maine. He was the last person to ever paint it. He was 18 at the time. Old Paint!!! He will be missed for those of us that only saw him when he visited "Moosehead Lake" Maine. A gentleman always.

Since the opening of my restaurant, Steve's Dakota Grill in Medina, Don had been a regular and quickly became royalty. We enjoyed his company when he would come back home to Medina for the Summer, and were always sad to say goodbye in the Fall when he left for the winter. Don always wore a smile and shared in great conversations with us. He was well respected for the truly wonderful self made man he was. We will surely miss him.
