George Dopp Obituary

Dopp, George Gilman Bigelow
George Gilman Bigelow Dopp, 71, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and patriot, passed away unexpectedly on February 9, 2011. He was born on August 22, 1939, in Elmhurst, Illinois, to George and Joan Bigelow Dopp. George graduated from Dixie Heights High School in Covington, Kentucky, where he enjoyed football, choir and theater. He began his college career at Eastern Kentucky University and then transferred to Marshall University on a football scholarship. He eventually returned to Eastern Kentucky where he completed his degree, earning a B.S. in Business. He was a distinguished military graduate of the ROTC program at Eastern Kentucky University. Following graduation, he entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing infantry officer training, he graduated from the Ranger and Airborne schools. He was reassigned to Munich, Germany, with the 24th Infantry Division. In Germany, he was a platoon leader in G3 operations staff and special weapons. From Germany, he was reassigned to Fort Lewis, Washington with the 4th Infantry Division. With the 4th Infantry Division, he served in Vietnam earning the Bronze Star. After Vietnam, he returned home to Fort Lewis and retired from his service to our country. George entered into a new career with Allstate Insurance which eventually brought him and his family to Arizona in March of 1974 as the state sales manager. He left Allstate and worked for Sentry Insurance from which he retired. Since that time, he has been an independent insurance broker. He has served his clients faithfully for over 44 years. George was active in the Veterans of Foreign War. George is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Joan Dawson Dopp; son, Dawson Dopp (Natalie); daughter, Lauren Pille (Erik); daughter, Susanne Leming (Steve), and six grandchildren, Devin, Ashlyn, and Jaryn Leming, Hannah and Delaney Dopp, and Jarrett Pille. While we are mourning the loss of our husband, father and grandfather (Paca), others are rejoicing to meet him in heaven. Dear Mrs. Dopp, Dawson, Lauren & Suzanne. Words can not express the deepest sorrow I feel for your family at this time. Your husband and father was a true gentleman with great distinct character. He will be missed by all whose lives he has touched and I am honored to have known him. Take comfort in knowing that he is close by, just you look into your hearts he's there.

My sincere sympathy and prayers are with you, Joan, and your beautiful family. I will miss George’s encouraging words, his prayers, unconditional friendship and when his classmates get together for our mini reunions they will not be the same without him.
George touched many lives along his life's journey and everyone he met became special to him. Yes, he was one of a kind and a true patriot to his country.
While we are celebrating his life here, heaven is celebrating another angel has been added.

I met George while working for Daniels Nicolson Insurance. We shared an office for quite a while. I learned a lot from George... not just about insurance, but mainly about life and how to treat people and family. He was a great mentor and friend. I last spoke with him on Veterans Day to thank him for his service, as he was the first person that comes to mind when I think of a proud veteran, and always will be.

I am proud to have known him.

Dear Joan,
I am from the Dixie class of 1956, however, George and I were good friends throughout highschool. He was our punter on the football team, hence a valued player. I lost my wife of 47 years just 2 years ago, so my heart is with you. These will be the hardest days of your life, but life will go on and eventually you will be buoyed up by your memories. Always - Boyd
