Henrietta Soza Aguilar

Tempe - Henrietta Soza Aguilar, 87, was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, friend, and devout Catholic. Affectionately known as "Henri," "Nana," "Keta," or "Mom," she peacefully left this world on June 3, 2021 in Tempe, Arizona. She is currently strolling a beautiful beach, a favorite leisure activity, and catching up with loved ones who have gone before her.

She was born to Victoria and Henry Soza on March 13, 1934 in Tempe. The Soza Family, no stranger to Arizona history, dates back over two centuries to a Spanish Presidio near Tubac (1774). Henrietta grew up in The Valley attending Tempe Grammar, North High School and West High School, making lifelong friends along the way. She was employed by Arizona State University's Athletic Department for over 20 years. An avid ASU sports fan, she especially enjoyed football games (home or away) and tailgating with family and friends. Henri touched the lives of many an Athletic Department employee, coach, or student-athlete over the years, some even referring to her as their "Second Mom."

Henrietta is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, John Aguilar, and her forever grateful children Gloria (Jack) Lepird, Dianne Aguilar, Johnny Aguilar, Natalie Wisneski, Daniel Aguilar and Anthony (Katie Sisulak) Aguilar, who promise to make sure her life lessons, funny stories and of course, delicious recipes, are passed on to the next generation - while reinforcing their relationships and enhancing the lives of others by always making sure family and friends feel "welcome" just like she did.

Nana's eight grandchildren, Nathan Rodriguez, Vanessa Rodriguez, Victoria Aguilar, Adrianna Aguilar, Hayden Wisneski, Camryn Wisneski, Addison Aguilar, and Gabriella Aguilar promise to live life like "Nana" would want them to live it, while continuing to "treat others as they would want to be treated."

Keta's cherished siblings, Caroline Benites, Henry Soza Jr., and Christine (Al) Aros promise to leave a chair open for her at all upcoming birthday lunches, always raising a glass in her honor, as well as to their predeceased sibling, Daniel Soza.

A funeral mass will be held for family and friends at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Tempe on Monday, June 14, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please hug your loved ones like "Nana" hugged her grandchildren and consider a donation to Aguilar Elementary School or Hospice of the Valley.

I was fortunate to work with Henri for many years. Henri, was my Administrative Assistant and I grew as a professional while working with her. I could always count on her to be positive and smiling all day no matter how complicated the issues were of the day.
I can attest to the fact that she really loved her family and was proud of John and all of children.
To the family this was a wonderful Women and I thank you so much for sharing her with the rest of us. Our lives at ASU will always be enriched because we knew Henrietta Aguilar.

I had the pleasure of working with Henrietta at Arizona State University for many years. She was an amazing respectful professional and always had a kind word for you when you really needed it. She will be missed but never forgotten.
she was one of the best Sun Devils of all times. Thank you Henrietta for all you taught me and help you gave me when I was at a very young coach that needed that advise.

To the most compassionate, caring, loving, and faithful woman that I have known, and was blessed to be a part of her family. We will forever morn her passing, but remain joyful in our hearts, remembering her for all that she gave to everyone so selflessly. May Henrietta be granted the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, which will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We pray for all of the Aguilar family for their peace as well.
