Hugo Cozzi Obituary

Hugo L. Cozzi, M.D. In Loving Memory Hugo Louis Cozzi, M.D. lost his hard fought battle with cancer on March 8, 2005. Born August 3, 1934 to Ida (Fratta) and David Cozzi in Travesio, Italy, he grew up in Peekskill, NY. He completed medical training at Georgetown University in 1966 specializing in psychiatry. He served in the US Army and the US Public Health Service and was a retired federal employee. He began practicing in Phoenix in 1968. His career included private practice as well as numerous and varied positions with local hospitals. His colleagues will remember him for his commitment to high ethical standards, professionalism and work through the more than 20 professional committees on which he either served or chaired as well as for his sense of humanity and personal warmth, humour and great generosity toward them, his patients and his profession. Active in professional affairs, he served as president of the Arizona Psychiatric Society and the Phoenix Psychiatric Council, and as representative to the Assembly of District Branches of the American Psychiatric Association, of which he was a Distinguished Life Fellow, as well as a member of many other professional organisations. For relaxation, he enjoyed music, photography, travel, backyard projects and being with friends. Most of all, Hugo enjoyed his family. His love, guidance and wit will be dearly missed. Preceded in death by his parents & brother Adrian, he is survived by his wife Martha, daughter Elise, son David and nephew Adrian. Visitation will be held on March 14, 2005 from 10:00-11:00 am, with services at 11:00 am at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd. Interment at Paradise Memorial Gardens, 9300 E. Shea Blvd., immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hugo's memory to Hospice of the Valley, 5111 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, 85250.

Hugo was a great classmate and will be greatly missed. May our Lord console his wife Martha, his son David, and his daughter Elise.

One of my first "grown-up" jobs was working with Dr. Cozzi at Good Samaritan Hospital -- and I don't want to tell you how long ago that was! He was a wonderful man with a big heart and he taught me a lot -- and I won't mention the huge crush I had on him then! I will always cherish my very special memories of him!

Dr. Cozzi was like a second father to me growing up. He taught me to appreciate British humor, amazing photography and classical music. I loved him and I love his family. My most memorable times are when he had to pull a toothpick out of my foot, and when he brought home the liquid nitrogen for Elise and I, and Mission Beach and just spending time over at the house. Staying up late watching Benny Hill, Saturday Night Live, Monty Python or scary movies. They always welcomed me. He will always hold a place in my heart.
