James Louis Kerr Sr.

James Kerr Obituary

James Louis Kerr, Sr., age 71, died peacefully in his sleep at home on September 12, 2004. Jim was born in Concordia, Kansas to Dorothy and John Kerr on Aug. 26, 1933. The family moved west to California during the dust bowl days where they settled in Modesto, CA. Jim graduated from Modesto High School and was awarded a four-year California, Regional scholarship to Princeton University. He majored in Electrical Engineering and after graduating in 1954, he started his work in the computer field. He was a Lieutenant in the Army from 1955-1957. He married Grace Loderhose (Mt. Holyoke '54) in 1955 and they enjoyed a loving and productive marriage that lasted for 49 years. Jim settled in Phoenix to work for General Electric in their large Computer Engineering Dept. In 1959, he was one of four to receive the first Masters Degree awarded in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. He retired in 1989. He was a man of many talents-meticulous in his work and brilliant in his abilities to work through computer designs and problems. Jim was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. He delivered mobile meals, was a 16 gallon blood donor, active in politics in the early 60's, an Elk, a member of Eta Kappa Nu honorary society, one of the founders of We Hold These Truths, a Bible Study student, and an avid hunter. He is survived by his wife, Grace, his daughter, Laura Mann and sons James, Jr. and Steven. He felt blessed to have a wonderful son-in-law, David Mann and a caring, loving daughter-in-law, Debra Kerr. He was the proud grandfather of Rachel Mann and Lea Kerr. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Langill, brothers John and Robert and dearest friend and pal, Marge Mayes. Jim was a true friend to all, especially to those in need. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He loved his Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior, his family and his country. He was one of the good guys. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3641 N. 56th St., Phoenix, AZ 85018, Strait Gate Ministries, P.O. Box 14491, Scottsdale, AZ 85267 or your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 18th at 11:00am at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3641 N, 56th St. in Phoenix.
