Jean Chatham Obituary
Mesa - Dr. Jean Joseph Chatham, age 48, died suddenly of a heart attack on Saturday March 2, 2019 while mountain biking, a hobby he loved. Dr. Chatham was born in Kottayam, Kerala, India on March 30, 1970. Together with his parents, he immigrated to the United States in 1976. The Chatham family made Phoenix, Arizona their permanent home in 1980. He was a paperboy for the AZ Republic from 13-18 years old, earning a college scholarship for his tenure. Dr. Jean Chatham graduated from Brophy College Preparatory in 1988 and was a speech and debate champion and played in the school band. He majored in Biochemistry from the University of Arizona in 1992 and received the distinguished Outstanding Senior Award and graduated with high honors, among several other academic accolades. He attended Tufts University School of Medicine and graduated in 1996 with his medical degree. He became a cardiologist and joined his father, Dr. Joseph Chatham's practice in 2003. In joint partnership in 2010, he and his father went on to create a successful and thriving interventional cardiology practice, the Chatham Heart Center, located in Mesa, Arizona. He served on the Medical Executive Committee for Banner Heart Hospital. He was well respected by his collogues and was often consulted on complex cardiology cases. He was repeatedly named one of Arizona's Top Doctors in Phoenix Magazine. Jean is survived by his loving wife, Indu Korah Chatham and his three devoted children, Luke Joseph Chatham (18), Maya Maria Chatham (16) and Mathew Jacob Chatham (14); his loving parents, Dr. Joseph and Valsala Chatham; his loving sister Elizabeth Sira Chatham, his brother -in-law, Giano Panzarella, and their children, Nikhil Panzarella (12) and Ashan Panzarella (11). He was an avid photographer, tennis player, and had immersed himself in the technical aspects of mountain biking. Most of all he was a devoted family man who lived in the moment and appreciated the many blessings God had bestowed on him. Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m., Friday March 8, 2019 with visitation to follow from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Funeral Home, 1562 E. Baseline Road, Mesa, AZ. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 1534 N. Recker Road, Mesa, AZ with burial to follow at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 1562 E. Baseline Rd., Mesa, AZ. Arrangements entrusted to Queen of Heaven Catholic Funeral Home, Mesa, AZ

The first time I met Dr. Jean as a patient, I instantly felt at ease with him. Over the course of many visits, I kept telling myself that I was SO very lucky to have him taking care of me. When this memory popped up in my email, I couldn't help but feel sad for his family but happy I had the chance to have this awesome human being take care of me. Rest in Peace Dr. Jean, you will never be forgotten.

I was able to get together with a small group of University of Arizona alumni recently. We all shared a strong bond with Jean as fellow Bobcats Honorary Members. We drank a toast in Jean's honor and shared many stories/memories. He is sincerely missed but will remain in our hearts always.

Today is one year for Dr. Jeans passing. I cannot comprehend that it’s been one year. He was more than a doctor. He was a friend and coworker when I worked at the same hospital. He would spend time with his patients asking how things are at home, with their family, etc. I am always keeping his family in my prayers. Gone way too soon. RIP, Dr Jean. You are never forgotten.

I just learned of Dr. Jean's passing and I'm in disbelief and so saddened. I can truly say this fine Dr. saved my life. After wearing a heart monitor for 30 days and him seeing the results, I was immediately referred to Dr. Chan, an EP and a surgery date was set to have an ICD implanted. I was at a great risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. That was in 2005 and thanks to Dr. Chatham, I'm doing very well today. Every time I had a visit with him, he was just so kind and so concerned about how I was doing and feeling. He made sure I had no issues with anything. None of us know what the future holds for us, but I feel very blessed to have known this fine man. My prayers and thoughts are going out to his family. Heaven certainly has gained another angel. Dr. Jean was my husband Richard's cardiologist for the last half dozen years. I was my husband's caregiver for those years and so was with him for his medical appointments with Dr. Jean. I was so thankful for his caring manner and wonderful input which kept Richard on his feet and moving....right until his passing on December 4, 2018. Dr. Jean saw Richard during his last hospitalization and his care and concern were a great help to me during those last days. My condolences go out to Dr. Jean's family and to Dr. Joe, my own cardiologist. I will miss the always present smile and good advice.

Dr. Jean Chatham was the physician on call when I took my husband at 1 A.M. to the hospital with chest pains. He saved his life and we are eternally grateful. God must have really needed a VERY special person when he called Dr. Jean to Heaven! My Mom, Adah Lepp, and I were quite saddened and very shocked to hear the news. We are still in disbelief!
I can honestly say that Dr. Jean has had MORE of an impact on me than any other doctor in my whole life; and I've never been his patient. Both my Mom and her husband have been under his care for many, many years.
He was a wonderful cardiologist, but also a very thoughtful counselor-like doctor who looked at each situation very holistically. Early on, he went out of his way to contact me and explain I needed to start thinking about my Mom's future housing/care, as her husband's health was failing. This was a pivotal time for us and I've always been so thankful for his guidance and advice.
He saved the day once again (and probably my Mom) when she had a heart attack. The doctor on call was pressuring me to make a decision regarding next steps. I was SO happy to see Dr. Jean the next day in the hospital, as we trusted him so much! Dr Jean took the pressure and stress off of me, as he made the ultimate decision. This has served us well, as my mom will be 94 in June.
We were very blessed to know Dr. Jean, who was always so genuine and so compassionate. I know there is a special place in Heaven for Dr. Jean because of all the wonderful things he has done for others on this earth.
God bless Dr. Jean's family, friends and colleagues during this time and forever! I will never forget the impact that Dr. Jean has had on me and my family.

Jacque and I are shocked and saddened to learn of Dr. Jean's passing. On November 2, 2016 he saved my life from a heart attack. I was to meet with him tomorrow and learned of his death as I rescheduled my regular visit. My wife, a cardiac intensive care nurse for 44 years and I trusted him completely. He was very serious and incredibly precise in dealing with my health. We also enjoyed his smiles and quiet humor. It is the irony of all ironies that a heart attack should take a young man who was so careful with his own health and the health of others. We met Jene and Indu for Tim's wedding in LA. I very briefly spoke to him. I heard about his death last Sunday. I visited his face book and it was then I realised the caliber of Jene. He was indeed a great person, a loving son, a faithful husband and a proud father. Viewing the condolences messages, I see he had touched a lot of people in his short life. I'm shocked and speechless that a dear friend and revered colleague has departed, and so soon. I knew him as a passionate, caring doctor and an honest human being. I rubbed elbows with him taking care of high risk patients. He had an extraordinary clinical acumen and always put patient's interest first. Soft in speech but sturdy in decisions. My heart also goes to his father Joseph, also a dear friend. Father and son made up an extraordinary team of heart doctors in the valley.
Jean's helping nature, caring attitude and humble demeanor will be sorely missed. Big loss for family and friends, even though heaven already smiling on him.
I'll pray that God give his parents, wife and children the strength to cope with his unexpected and untimely departure.

It is with great sadness I write this. Having been a Case Manager at Banner Gateway I have many fond memories of Dr Jean. I remember one instance in particular when I saw him walking a patient down the hall with the oxcimetry monitor. He was so caring and genuinely concerned about her health and recovery. He continued to encourage her with his positivity. Not many physcians would do this. It was 6 years ago and the memory has stayed with me because it truely demonstrated the kind caring person he was. Both Dr Joe and Dr Jean are highly respected. Having known Dr Joe since the 1980's my heart goes out to him and his family. Words cannot express the deep sorrow felt. Prayers to all. I had the wonderful privilege of working for Dr Jean Chatham for over ten years. He was, not only my boss, but a very dear friend. He was a compassionate physician who truly cared for his patients. I've known Jean personally and professionally and like many others remain shocked at his loss. Jean was an amazingly brilliant cardiologist, a God-fearing humble man of faith, wonderful husband, nurturing dad. I already miss his smile and laughter and discussions in the hallways of the hospital and the doctors lounge. He was so happy and proud of his three children and he would frequently talk of their achievements and the challenges of his need to rarely discipline. I'm sure our God the Lord Jesus Christ(The Great Physician) has embraced Jean in heaven and said "well done good and faithful servant!"
