I remember Paradise Valley High in the middle 1960s as being a sub-standard physical campus with an outstanding and motivated young faculty. Miss Harvey was one of its stars. She taught English with a smile on her face, and extended my twenty minute attention span to 55 minutes every day I was in her class. I sat in the front row immediately in front of her desk, but I know her warmth radiated to every seat in that classroom. We were blessed to have her as a teacher, and she was blessed to choose a profession that enabled her to have a sustaining impact on so many lives.

Jo Ann was department chair when I first started teaching at PVHS and then at Shadow Mountain. I will always remember her advice to be gentle in grading essay papers. She called it a compliment sandwich: slip a suggestion in between two positive comments about the writing. Great advice from a wonderful teacher and friend.

You remain in our hearts and thoughts as we continue on our daily paths. We love and miss you, but find comfort in the thought of you going on to a better place where your Dad and Brother have gone before you.

Ms. Harvey was one of my favorite teachers at PVHS. She was my instructor for Senior English. I still remember her sitting in front of the class reading poetry to us. I also remember her creative assignments that helped us all to become better writers. It was clear that she loved teaching and she cared about her students. My condolences to her family.

Ms. Harvey, my senior English teacher, was a great role model for how to teach with dignity and grace. She raised the bar on the expectations of what 17 & 18 years could learn. I hope I did half the job she did in my many years in the classroom in TX and TN.

My sister graduted from PVHS in 1966, my freahmann year. She told me to be sure to take Ms. Harvey's senior english class for which I will always be thankful I did. Ms. Harvey allowed me and my classmates the freedom to explore and dare dream of what we could accomplish in our futures, for this I am grateful. She will be missed by all those she touched in her special way. My condolances to her family and my prayers to her. PVHS 69

My deepest sympathies to Ms. Harvey's family. Jo Ann was my teacher for senior English at PVHS (1968-69) and was probably the one who most influenced my writing, giving me the best critiques and encouragements. I'm sure she was one of the primary reasons I had the inclination to pursue journalism midway though college. She was surely one of my best, and best remembered, teachers. I also remember she never shied away from letting the class discuss a wide range of ideas, controversial and otherwise. I know my father, who served on the school board for many years, thought very highly of her.

Ms. Harvey was my English teacher at PVHS. I think she made each of her students feel noticed and heard and cared for.

I graduated from PVHS in 1968 and will always remember Miss Harvey as a very kind and understanding teacher. She would make you feel like you could accomplish anything you wanted in life. She herself had physical challenges and she didn't let that get in her way. She was the one who practiced what she preached. She was a very good English teacher and I will always be inspired by her. May the family find comfort in knowing that many people loved and will miss her.....Sincerely, Janie Booth Shimek

I am a graduate of Paradise Valley High School, class of '65. Jo Ann Harvey was absolutely my favorite teacher during high school and one of the five best teachers of my entire education. I attribute much of what I know about writing and my lifelong love of reading to her. I still have a vivid mental picture of Ms. Harvey reading to us in class, eyes brimming with tears, voice cracking with emotion. I remember her beautiful, soft laugh. She was a great person. Condolences to her family.

I had Jo Ann Harvey as one of my English teachers. I believe it was English 9/10. She was one of only a few educators of that time to give meaningful direction to my life and, as such, she turned out to be one of my top 5 favorite teachers at PVHS (65-69). I will always think of here with respect and fond memories.

I graduated from PVHS in 1965 and Ms. Harvey was one of my English teachers. I fondly remember her as very encouraging. I was never a good student, but she managed to bring more out of me and actually made me enjoy reading the classics. I will never forget her. May God bless and comfort you in your loss.

Jo Ann was a colleague of mine at Horizon High School. From 1985-1990 we coached the school's Academic Decathlon team. As a young teacher I learned so much from her. I was saddened to hear of her passing- my prayers and thoughts are with her family and friends. She has left a legacy.

Ms. Harvey will be missed by al those she touched. She was the best English teacher I ever encountered. Much of my career has been spent writing, a love that she taught me in her class, AP English at Shadow Mountain High School. My thoughts are with her at this time.

Deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, Mrs Harvey was one of my teachers at PVHS and I was her student aide for 4 years. she was an amazing lady, and one of the few teacher who actually inspire students to dream and reah beyond the normal school system. Her shining smile upbeat attitude made any day better for everyone around her, and despite having physical issues of her own, never let on that any day was less than the best. Her spirit will be missed by many whose life she has touched.
