Joe Quan Obituary

Quan, Joe D. Y.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a friend to many, Joe D. Y. Quan passed away peacefully on January 3, 2017 in his home in Phoenix. Born on February 26, 1927 in Chek Hom, a small village in Guangzhou province of China, Joe had a rather unusual upbringing. When he was young, he immigrated to the United States with his oldest sister and her husband, and went to middle school in Los Angeles. It was there and then that he developed his lifetime love of USC football as the players and coaches befriended this young boy who would stop and watch football practice every day on his way home from school. Joe's mother stayed in China. He occasionally saw his father who would spend months working in San Francisco and then head back home to China. Joe moved with his sister and her husband to Phoenix where he went to and graduated from North Phoenix High School, and then served in the US Army for three years during World War II. After serving his country, he went back to China to marry Anna, which started off as a blind date arranged by a friend. But when he saw Anna the first time, he knew she was the one. Joe and Anna started their life together first operating American Food Market, then Keystone Market and, finally, Blue Star Market. Their lives were full with work, family and friends. Joe was devoted to Anna and they were partners for thirty years in the grocery business in Phoenix. Joe loved to bowl and won many a trophy in the Chinese bowling leagues. He was also active in the American Legion. Joe was always quick with a smile and greeting. He knew how to win people over with his warm personality. And Joe loved his family. His wife Anna predeceased him in 2010. Joe is survived by his children Joanne (Jim) Reynolds, Phyllis (Craig) Steinberg, Les (Paula) Quan and Gary (Julie Ann) Quan; grandchildren Tyler (Lindsay) Quan, Nicholas (Meghan) Quan, Gillian Reynolds, Christopher Reynolds, Jesse Steinberg, Travis Steinberg, Christina Quan, Victoria Quan, and Sarah Quan; and, great grandchildren Jack Quan, Annie Quan, Michael Quan and Koa Quan. Visitation and viewing will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at A.L. Moore Grimshaw Mortuary at 710 W. Bethany Home Road in Phoenix. Services will be on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Greenwood Cemetery Serenity White Chapel at 2300 West Van Buren Street in Phoenix. Gravesite internment will follow the services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Banner Health Foundation in memory of Joe Quan (2901 North Central Avenue, Ste. 160, Phoenix, AZ 85012; 602/747-4483).

Joanne, Jim, Gillie & Chris; Phyl, Craig Jesse & Travis; Les, Paula, Tyler & Nick; and Gary, Julie, Christina & Victoria and great-grandchildren -- the Quan clan is an amazing crew. Anna was a cheerful and extraordinary cook. Joe was a gentle force of nature who loved USC but mostly deeply loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. My favorite memory was his offering to buy Joanne and me tickets to New York and Boston, as we headed off to postbac adventures -- just after my Volvo was fixed and before I taught Joanne how to drive a stick shift in a local parking lot Had I known that he was a bowler, I would have teamed with him. I once won a mixed doubles Thanksgiving Turkey with my dad Ben. Imagine what we could have won! You, all, have been blessed to know and love Grandpa Joe. Marsha HIrano-Nakanishi and Tom Nakanishi
