Scholten, Johannus (John)
age 57 of Amherst, WI passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2010 after struggling with lung and brain cancer. John was born in Groningen, Netherlands on Nov. 17, 1952, and moved to Grand Rapids, MI with his parents Bernardus and Johanna Scholten, brother Bernardus Scholten, and sisters Ina (Marshall), Dina (Risner) and Tina Scholten in 1955. An extremely hard worker from a young age, John quit school to care for his father who died from cancer, and went from selling shoelaces and working in a local hardware store as a boy to owning and operating several businesses including Milwaukee Fence, Atlas Fence, Valleywide Fence and the Tomorrow River Supper Club and Motel. John's work ethic and positive attitude was an inspiration to many people. He spent most of his life helping others to see their own potential. Whether it was opening up his home to foster kids, family members or strangers, giving a job to someone who was in need, or just giving his time and efforts to anyone who needed a hand, John was always there to help without complaints. He was a lover of adventure, and many will remember hiking with him in the Superstition Mountains, taking his children, their friends and various nieces and nephews horseback-riding, fishing, boating, swimming or just playing sports with them in the backyard. John was a member of the Amherst Lions Club and enjoyed doing many things with them to help his community. John is survived by his loving family: his wife of 37 years Marilyn (Watson) Scholten, his son John Henry Scholten Jr. (Nicole LeZalla) and grandchildren Avah and Madison Scholten, and his daughters April Marie Sokolova (Philip Sokolov) and Penny Jean Scholten (Thomas Meeks), and his siblings. A Celebration of John's Life will begin with a Memorial Service on Saturday, May 8 at 1 PM at the Tomorrow River Supper Club, Amherst, WI with a reception to follow.
