John Blackburn Obituary

John A. Blackburn, Ph.D., 66, passed away Sunday, October 10th. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons, John, Jr. and Tim; and daughter, Kathleen Lane. He is the grandfather of seven and the great grandfather of two. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Dr. Blackburn has been a fixture in Arizona's criminal justice system for nearly 30 years; and since 1987, worked as a Special Assistant for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office handling legislative matters. Over the years, he has left his imprint on many of Arizona's most important criminal justice laws; working closely with statewide county attorneys and sheriffs since 1975. Prior to joining the MCAO, he spent 10 years as the Executive Director of the Central Arizona Association of Government. Dr. Blackburn started his law enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff in California for the Riverside Sheriff's Office where he rose through the ranks until a 1969 duty related injury ended his active enforcement career. John was a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles and he obtained his Doctorate in 1977 from the University of Southern California. Services are being held Friday, October 15th 10 a.m. at Resurrection Church, 3201 S. Evergreen, Tempe, AZ 85282. In lieu of sending flowers the family respectfully requests donations be made in his name to Odyssey Hospice or to the Aid to Women Center. Arrangements entrusted to Lakeshore Mortuary, Mesa.

I am so sad to hear Dr. Blackburn has passed away. He was an excellent mentor and one of the kindest people in the world. I learned so much from him during the short time I had the opportunity to work with him at the County Attorney's Office. I will never forget him.

I am very sorry to hear about John's passing. I worked with John when he was director at CAAG. He was a great boss and sincerely cared about his staff. He moved the agency forward in challenging times- always with a positive attitude. I've always considered John a friend.

My heartfelt condolences to the Blackburn family. As you look back over the years it will not be difficult to get lost in the wonderful memories you shared. May you find strenght, comfort, guidance, and peace as each day passes. He will always walk beside you and watch over you. He did'nt go alone, part of you went with him,the day God took him home. Rest in peace Dr. Blackburn. Your journey in life was special and you will always be missed.
