John Michael Torok

John Torok Obituary

John Michael Torok, 63, a long time Arizona resident, passed away May 14th, 2007 at his Ahwatukee home. He was born to Marjorie and Albert Torok in Los Angeles, California, where he grew up with a love of life and sports. John moved to Arizona when he was offered an athletic scholarship to attend ASU, where he played for legendary Coaches Bobby Winkles and Frank Kush. Among John's many career highlights at ASU were playing on Arizona State's first College World Series team and being the Sun Devil's Quarterback under Frank Kush. John will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, his dry wit and his quick smile. John loved to cook and golf. He also liked to laugh, usually at his golfing and cooking, but any occasion with his wife, friends and extended family made him the happiest. John is survived by his wife of 39 years: Mary Jane Torok of Ahwatukee; two daughters: Kelly Torok (Andrew) Ingram of Phoenix, and Jill Torok (Jerry) Naleski of Flagstaff, and son, Joe Torok of Ahwatukee; his mother, Marjorie Torok and siblings, Thomas, Michael and David Torok and Gayle Freeman. John, lovingly referred to as "Bumpa" is also survived by three grandchildren: Margaret (Meg) Rose Ingram, William (Will) John Ingram, and Georgia Camille Naleski. The family is hosting an Open House to celebrate John's life at his residence on Saturday the 19th of May, from 1:00 to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in John's memory to the American Heart Assn. (americanheart.org) or the Sun Angel Foundation (sunangelfoundation.org).

From all the young men (well, not really young anymore) who played football for John, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family. We recieved his care and guidance in our lives for only a short while. However, it has remained with us and gotten us through many challenges we have faced. Thanks for all you gave us!

I just returned home from my son's soccer tournament in Seattle to receive this very sad news for me. John was one of my favorite teammates as I loved to laugh with him. I'll never forget his SMILE. I'll cherish my memories of John at this very same time way back in 1964, and I am extremely grateful I got to spend time with John in the Spring of 2001. My thoughts and prayers go out to John's entire family.

John was a remarkable football and baseball player at ASU and a great guy. I did not see him too often after our baseball days at ASU, but when I did he was always warm and friendly and interested in what others had done in the years after ASU athletics. I am saddened to hear he is no longer with us. My sincere sympathy to his wife and family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Big JT at Jill and Jerry's wedding - a giant man full of happiness and warmth. The kind of guy you could tell lived and loved to the fullest just by being in the same room with him. I celebrate the life of John Michael Torok. The world is a better place thanks to men like him.
