To Our Sister- Sandy Bernard, and S/M Joe's daughter and son-in-law,
Linda and Joe Porto and family.

To Shipmate Joe,
(April 6,1924 to November 13,2007).

You wore many Hats in your life - Son, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Petty Officer/ET1,S/M Joe, Sir Joe, Chaplain,Sailor-Submariner, Veteran, Postal worker.

To Sandy: A Friend, Love, Groom, Partner, Companion, Soul mate.

To us that knew you as S/M:You were there with a Smile, Kind word, a Prayer, with Guidance, a Helping hand, - with wisdom.

As Sir Joe: You earned your Knighthood thru your Degrees of work and earnest.

As PO/ET1: You stood fast and fought to achieve your Rank, as many will never know. First as a sailor-then as a submariner. You Stood your watch and more.

Then as a Postal Worker: You ensured mail was delivered.

As Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle: You Loved, Guided, Supported, Cared for, Hurt for, and Healed.

But most of all, Our Friend:You have earned your Angel Wings.Rest well, Our Friend as you have earned. Thank You Joe,

Smooth Sailing. Fair Winds, and Following Seas - Friend.

You will be missed, and always Loved

THE WATCH
This sailor has stood the watch
While some of us were in our bunks at night
This sailor stood the watch
While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch
Yes, even before some of us were born in this world
This shipmate stood the watch

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen
This shipmate stood the watch
Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see
his family standing there
Needing his guidance and help
Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch
He stood the watch for many years
He stood the watch so that we, our families and
Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in
safety, each and every night
Knowing that a sailor stood the watch
Today we are here to say
"Shipmate...the watch stands relieved
Relieved by those you have trained, guided and lead
Shipmate - you stand relieved...we have the watch"
"Boatswain - Standby to pipe the side
Shipmate Going Ashore"

Thank you for your service to this nation.
