Martin Pollack Obituary

Martin Pollack

Scottsdale - Martin Pollack, 86, a real-estate developer in Scottsdale, died after a brief illness in Ithaca, NY on December 12, 2020.

Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1934, Martin was a graduate of New Utrecht High School. He went on to Brooklyn College and earned a degree in Business Administration at City College of New York. Martin's business career spanned more than 65 years. His first job was at AJ Armstrong, a financial services company in Manhattan. Later, he joined York International, a beef importer, and in 1974, formed Damar International, also importing beef. Starting in 1976, he began developing real estate projects in Scottsdale and nationwide. These included shopping centers, residential, retail, office, and public entertainment sites. In the recent past, Martin was lead developer of Arizona Boardwalk in Scottsdale which includes Odysea Aquarium, as well as Butterfly Wonderland and Mirror Maze.

In 1956, a cousin set him up on a blind date with Susan Levine, and on their second date, Martin told her that he was going to marry her. They married in 1957 and remained married until her death in 2014. They lived in Stamford, CT where they raised their two children, until they moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 1977. They were avid Phoenix Suns fans. A lifelong golfer, Martin also enjoyed many rounds of mini golf games with his grandchildren. Known for his good sense of humor, he always had jokes to share, both clean and mature.

Martin is survived by his sisters Leila Rosenzweig and Diane Pollack, and his children, Martha Pollack (Ken Gottschlich) of Ithaca, NY and David Pollack (Lucy) of Wilmington, DE. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Anna Gottschlich, Nicholas Gottschlich, Katie Pollack, and James Pollack. He will also be greatly missed by his many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, as well as his "Arizona family" Ram and Renu Shembekar, and their daughters Madhura and Mugdha.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.
