Lance Cpl. Michael A. Downey
Lauren Eiler believes the sniper's bullet that slammed into her son's spine as he worked to destroy captured insurgent weapons would have killed him instantly but for his desire to say goodbye to family before he died. "He knew how hard it would be for us if we couldn't say goodbye," Eiler said of her son, Michael Downey. "I am so grateful." Downey, 21, of Phoenix, died Nov. 19, eight days after he was wounded in Iraq. He was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Eiler said Downey knew immediately after he was shot that he would be paralyzed because he couldn't feel his legs. "Unless there was a lot of healing on the miraculous level, he would have been paralyzed from the waist down," Eiler said. "He was asking his guys: 'Are my legs there? Are my legs there?'" Eiler learned of her son's injuries on Nov. 12 and flew to Bethesda, Md., where he was being treated, the next day. His father, William J. Downey, also flew to Bethesda, she said. "My son was the bravest, strongest person I've ever known," Eiler said.

Think about you and all the times we had just about every day. From tattoos to betting xboxs and the bowling lanes lol. I have you tattooed on my arm and embedded in my heart brother. That was a platoon of marines and a time in my life I will never forget. God bless you and your family especially your mother who you always talked about.

As you already know....Rogers was taken from us on April 7th and is in heaven chilling with you. Do me a favor and show him the ropes, keep the black & tans cold, and save some room up there from the rest of the Dirty 3rd (Fallujah warriors) as we will all meet again. We miss you brother and think of you all the time.

Every few days I try to look at names on this site and today, for some reason, I happened upon the name of Michael Downey - the date is significant. It's been a long time since he died and while the ache never goes away, I hope that the years have brought some peace to his family and all who loved him.
Rest in Peace L/cpl Downey - you are remembered and honored.

Today is Memorial Day and I woke up thinking of Michael. I put out several flags in his honor, and for the honor of all those who have fought and died for our country. When we lost Michael, I related for the first time as a mother of a lost soldier. I share the sadness and tears with all mothers of lost soldiers. I share the tears with my daughter, for losing her best friend. You will not be forgotten, and Thank You.

Looking through records, books, and postings of the great sacrifice young men take is something I do with every second I have to spare. I thank every single person that has undertaken this ultimate sacrifice. My brother, a Sergeant in the Marine Corps, just got back from his fourth tour and I consider every Marine to be my brother. For every Marine I hear taking this ultimate sacrifice, a tear is shed... I will miss you brother. Semper Fi.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

'Thank you' sounds so insignificant at this time, but so does 'I'm Sorry' and I mean them both, from the bottom of my heart. The fact is, there aren't words or actions from anyone that will be of much help right now. Please know that many of us who have never met your wonderful son or you, will be praying for you and yours. May God give you peace and comfort now and always.
