Michael Fries Obituary

Michael Thomas Fries

Michael Thomas Fries, AIA, 62, passed away unexpectedly on February 6, 2021. He was born in Norwalk, Ohio, and graduated from Miami University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Environmental Design, and the University Of Texas School Of Architecture in 1984 with a Master of Architecture.

Michael and his wife Margaret were married in 1983 and moved to Phoenix, Arizona three years later. In 1995, they started FM GROUP INC, an architectural, environmental, and facilities firm that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2020, currently works in 50 states and around the world. In addition to starting his own firm and serving as the president of FM GROUP INC, over the years Michael taught at Arizona State University and The Asbestos Institute. He also volunteered for many years with the Rio Salado Architecture Foundation including serving on its board.

He loved to travel, especially with his family, and enjoyed sharing stories of their trips over the last couple of years to China, Mexico, Germany, New York City, and riding on a Mardi Gras parade float in New Orleans.

Michael had a remarkable appetite for life, an eye for detail, and a huge heart. One of the legacies he was proudest of was the mentorship and friendship he provided employees, colleagues and co-workers over the years. He is survived by his wife, children, parents, and brother and will be missed by innumerable uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Due to the current pandemic, a socially-distant, masked, visitation window with the family will occur on February 27th from 10am-12pm at Phoenix Memorial Park Cemetery.

I have just learned of Michael's passing. I am saddened to lose such a good friend and colleague. Michael and I worked together for over ten years on a number of projects both Lendlease and other private sector projects.. What began as a professional relationship soon turned into a valued friendship. My heart and prayers go out to Margaret and family. He will be greatly missed. A good man gone too soon.

I just received my Miamian magazine in the mail today and was shocked to notice Michael´s name in the Farewells section. I attended several of the alumni events he organized in Phoenix over the years. He was always so pleasant and warm, and greeted us with a smile when he handed out tickets to the Spring Training events he coordinated. He always did a great job and everyone had fun attending! We will miss him!

Michael was always enjoyable to be around whether it was in an office setting, business lunch or golf course! His positive energy & smile were infectious. He spoke fondly & often of his love for his beautiful wife Margaret, children & family. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to work with him in business & get to know him on a friendly level. He will be missed, but his uplifting spirit will live on forever!

I have known Michael for about 20 years. What started as a business relationship turned into a friendship. I wish all my clients were as enjoyable to work with as Michael. A honest, hard working man with a delightful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed! My condolences to Margaret and family.

I knew Michael when we were in our twenties. He was always a great guy and always upbeating happy. Then he moved away to pursue his degree. I knew when he left that he would be a great success in life. I am proud to have known Mike only a few years. I believe he's now in heaven with his creator.

To the family, so sorry for your loss. My memories are of Mike chairing Facilities Ministry at Scottsdale’s Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish. He was so eager and helpful in his desire to improve and maintain the parish properties. He will be missed.

Michael was a good friend. We worked together back in the early 1990's and we had a great relationship in spite of the fact that we went to rival universities. I was very impressed with his business acumen and his ability to make the most of a bad situation. He helped me out on several occasions and I am saddened to learn of his death. Rest in peace, my brother.
