Michael O'Melia Obituary

The Honorable Michael J. O'Melia, Retired. "He's just resting his eyes!"
Michael J. O'Melia, age 63, forgot to re-open his eyes after lying down for a short nap last Saturday evening. Although he surprised us with his timing, he died peacefully. He was husband to Betty, and dad to five daughters, Kelly, Erin, Amy, Katie and Kiley. He grew up in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and went to the University of Wisconsin on a basketball scholarship, where he won honors as an "All Big Ten Conference" guard. After law school at Marquette University, where he gave up his sneakers to become a trial lawyer, he went to work for his family's law firm, O'Melia and Kaye in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. In 1972, his family came to Arizona where he was in private practice until 1984 when he was appointed a Superior Court Judge for the State of Arizona. He would tell you, if you asked, however, that his most important job was raising his family. He watched with pride as his five daughters prospered as they made their own way in the world, and have enriched his life by presenting him ten grandchildren. He also was looking forward to his youngest daughter's college graduation in May. He relished his time with his progeny's progeny, and reveled in their growth either by coaching their teams, going to their games, or simply being with them as their worlds expanded. His grandkids fondly referred to him as "Bumpa." He was a darn proud grandpa! His interests never wavered. He was an athlete who loved to compete. Everything he played, from basketball to golf, was done well, with an abiding respect for the game and competitors. Oh, he would chide you a bit, but it was always with a twinkle in his eye and a love for you and the game you shared. We will miss him, but know that heaven is a better place today than it was last week. We suspect that he will be teeing up a ball in the clouds in the mornings, while saving the rest of the day looking after Betty, his girls, and grandkids from somewhere above them in the afternoon and evening. At night, he will "rest his eyes!" Judge O'Melia was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church parish in Phoenix, where he was regular lector for many years. He was a member of the Arizona Bar Association and the Wisconsin Bar Association. He was also a member of the University of Wisconsin National W Club. Michael is survived by his wife, Betty and five daughters and four son-in-laws, Kelly and Paul Delmore, San Diego, CA; Erin and Chris Tawney, Phoenix, AZ; Amy O'Melia Endres and Kevin Endres, San Diego, CA; Kathleen O'Melia and Bradley Miller, Phoenix, AZ; and Kiley M. O'Melia, Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren Molly and Kyle Delmore; Collin, Blake and Emma Grace Tawney; Haley, Audrey and Parker Endres; Trent and Alec Miller. He is also survived by his 10 brothers and sisters, Nora (Donald) Bluhm, Whitefish Bay, WI; Mary (David) Peterson, Rhinelander, WI; Patricia (Louie) Widule, Sugar Camp, WI; Susie (Jim) Jankowski, Rhinelander, WI; Chrissie (Jim) Kasson, Arlington, TX; Donald (Julie) O'Melia, Jr., Minocqua, WI; Peggy (David) Gillis, Escanaba, MI; Brian (Marian) O'Melia, Summerville, SC; David O'Melia, Rhinelander, WI; Dennis O'Melia, Madison, WI. He is further survived by his mother-in-law Marge Lind, of Phoenix; his sister-in-law Lynn (Caesar) Gallego, of San Marcos, CA; and many nieces and nephews including Stacey Angstead, Marc Angstead, Katie (Spencer) Taylor, Patrick O'Neill, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will include a Visitation from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, Friday, January 28th, 2006 at Brophy Chapel, 4701 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix with a Rosary immediately following. The Celebration Mass with be on Saturday, January 29th at 9:00 AM at St. Francis Xavier Church, 4715 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix. The family asks that any contributions be made to the following organizations: St. Francis Xavier Athletics Association, P.O. I think of Da Judge all the time. I can still hear his voice. I'm glad I can still see his smile when I visit his portrait downtown. Miss you, Judge O'Melia!

Da Judge was truly someone special. I'm sure he's up there teeing off in his wild St. Patrick's Day pants and watching over his beloved family. Betty and Kiley, my heart goes out to you. I thought the world of him, and always will.

O'Melia family -

My sincere sympathy in the time of your loss.

TIME...

Time is too slow for those who Wait

Too swift for those who Fear

Too long for those who Grieve

Too short for those who Rejoice

but for those who LOVE - Time is Eternity...

My thoughts & prayers are with you.

Dear O'Melia family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult and overwhelming time. I will always remember Mr. O for his warm and inviting smile, the twinkle in his eye, and his greeting of "Hi, Buddy!" My prayers for all of you are that you will keep him alive through sharing all the favorite stories and memories together -- through laughter, tears, and everything in between; that you may feel and know Christ's presence, support, and love even in this most difficult of times; and that God may bring you some comfort through the love and support of all your family and friends.

You are right, heaven is a better place this week, and I know my dad was there with open arms, a huge (crooked) smile, and a similar twinkle in his eye to welcome him home.

God bless you all and bring you peace, Kristen

Betty and Family:

I was very saddened to hear of Judge O'Melia's passing. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

He was certainly the best boss one could ask for -- he brought a lot of smiles to his staff and made going to work a joy. He showed us what teamwork was all about.

And he even took us to Ethel M's for truffles every so often.

He will be greatly missed.

Love,

Ginny

Dear Betty and girls,

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's death. I had a great visit with him at the cabin in November.

To the O’Melia Family,

I have such fond memories of your dad, which is why my heart sank so when I heard of his passing. He was a constant in your lives and also enriched the lives of your friends through his kindness, support, coaching and encouragement.

I was lucky enough to go to school with Kelly and her sisters at St. Greg’s and Xavier. Your dad truly cared about everyone around him and he spent countless summers coaching our softball team and turning us into winners. He encouraged everyone to be competitive with dignity.

Your dad was true gentleman and a class act. He will be remembered by many, and very missed. I send all of you my warmest thoughts during this time and thank you for sharing your father with me and so many of us who have been forever touched by him.

Dear Betty and family. I am so sorry for your loss. Judge was my favorite Judge and he always felt like family to me. I always teased him and told him that I felt close enough to him that he felt like my father. He always told me that he was not old enough! He did have a gentle soul and we all loved him. As Judge would say to us as he left for the day "always a pleasure" and it was.

Love,

JA Stephenie

To Betty and Family,

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many people. I have fond memories of sharing my life stories with him. I would come into his office and he would say "Oh no it's Trixie in here. Go Away I have work to do, but he always listened and laughed with myself and his JA Stephenie. He was always smiling. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten in our lives. Love Camille alias Trixie.

Betty and Girls,

Scott and I are so sorry for your loss. I sure enjoyed my time as one of Judge O'Melia's bailiffs downtown. He was like a father to me. I will miss seeing him behind his desk with that smile and those blue eyes. He made us smile and still does when I think of him.

I will always cherish the time I knew him and look forward to seeing him again someday.

We will keep you all in our prayers.

Betty:

Please accept my condolences on Mike's moving on to the big game in the sky. As his obituary says, he was a fierce but fair competitor always with a smile on his face. I remember his great passing and moves to the basket playing basketball many years ago at the Downtown YMCA where he was a fixture at noon pick up games. I wouldn't be surprised if he and his old running mate, Ken Clancy, haven't already teamed up to run their pick 'n roll with anybody they can find to get on the court.
