Michael Safian Obituary
68, of Anthem, AZ passed away on March 3, 2013. Michael was born on September 8, 1944 in New York City. He graduated from St. Vincent's College in Latrobe, PA. He served in the Army in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Michael moved to California after the war and lived there for over 30 years before settling in Anthem, AZ. Michael had a giving heart and always tried to help those in need. Michael is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; son Christian Safian (Kristin); sister Cindy Safian; brother Lance Safian and step father Egon Safian (Rose Ellen). There will be a military service held on Friday March 15th at 10:30 am at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

Michael and I grew up together in Riverdale, N.Y. We attended St. Gabriel School and we all loved basketball. (You couldn't live in Riverdale and NOT love basketball - after all, we were the hub...Frank McGuire and Donnie Walsh used to scout out future stars at our playground.)I have a picture of Michael on the team... but that year, the girls basketball team beat the boys - we won the city championship - beating out St. Anthony of Padua (an impossible team to beat.) But we had secret weapons: Flossie Volpi and Cathy Walsh who brought us to victory! It was a great time in our lives, and Michael was part of it. God bless him and I'm sure all of Riverdale salutes his service to the U.S.A. We won't forget you, Mike; you were our hero.

Michael and I were raised together in Riverdale, N.Y. He was a great kid who shared the Riverdale passion of basketball. (You couldn't live in Riverdale and not love basketball!)So sad to hear of his passing, but let it be known that the Riverdale crowd mourns his loss - he was a great guy.I'm sure I speak for all of our mutual friends when we send sincere condolences to Lance and Cindy.

Mike was my freind when i had just a few freinds...We were close to each other in OCS...i talked with Mike a few years ago...i am at a loss for words...Rest from your labors my BROTHER!!! Joe Young
