Nellie Ard Obituary

Ard, Nellie Lee
89 of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away after a brief illness, Thursday April 7, 2011. Born to Joseph and Donna Bowen on October 18, 1921, in Elsmore, Kansas; Nellie, known to all as Lee, moved to the Phoenix area in 1944 and took a job as "Rosie the Riveter" in the defense industry, and later worked in the computer industry as quality control inspector. A devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed quilting, arts and crafts, cards, cooking, sewing. and spending time with family and friends. Lee married Dewey C. Ard in 1938. She was the beloved mother of five, Darrell, Delores, Deborah, Jon, and Stephen. Lee and Dewey were married for 65 years until his death in 2004. Lee was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Deborah. Lee is survived by a brother, Carl Bowen (Darlene), a sister in law Joyce Mapp, three sons, Darrell (Joanne), Jon (Georgia), & Stephen, a daughter, Delores Wright (Raymond), son in law Terry Cheney, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews with fond memories of Aunt Lee, co-workers, and friends. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 17, 201,1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Best Funeral Services - North Central Chapel, 501 East Dunlap, Phoenix, Arizona. Graveside services will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ on Monday, April 18, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

I met Lee in '76 when I was the new inspector and she was the inspector that trained me, We became instant friends. Through the years she taught me many things. During lunch one day, she taught me to crochet, and my son said she created a monster, because I was always crocheting after that. She shared her wonderful recipes that became family favorites for me and my family. She taught me about true, honest, loving friendship. Vicki Kraintz, Dee Fiore (Kedra) and I met with her for lunch at least twice a year. Many times she invited us to her home for home cooked lunches. I think she really enjoyed doing that for us. We always said "I love you" when we said goodbye after lunch. If too much time passed, she would call to see how I was and just to say "I love you". She always asked about my Mom and Kids, even sent hand made gifts to my Mom at Christmas sometimes. I will miss her musical little voice on the phone saying "Ello" when I called. I will miss our chats at lunch. I will just miss having her friendship in my life, because there will never be another friend like her ever. Lee, you made a difference in my life and you were very special to me. I will never forget you, I love you,

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Lee has been a friend since the 70's. She was such a lovely person. I will miss her terribly. Our DEC lunches will never be the same. You could always count on seeing her there.
