Dear Philip,
I write this letter to you in gratitude for the selfless sacrifice that you gave. You are missed by so many who love and respect you, and we take comfort in the assurance that all those who believe in Jesus, and His sacrifice for us, will some wonderful day meet again. Evil did not triumph that day, though it did try! The event of your passing only serves to remind us of what sacrifices love is willing to make every day! You lived the true meaning of "Semper Fidelis." Thank you!

Several times I have thought about writing in this book but have been unable to bring myself to. I'm not sure if I could ever fully put into words how heartbroken I was and still am when I heard about your death. Sarah and I have been friends for over 15 years and have been a staple in each other's lives since the day we met. From acne and bullies to boys and drill team we helped each other get through the joys and sorrows of life. We day dreamed about the men we would marry one day and the plans we had for our futures. When she met you, I was so happy that my best friend had found her equal and would have the love and security she deserved. I remember watching you guys and thinking it was as if two puzzle pieces had been put back together. Your wedding was honestly one of the happiest memories I have. I will never forget all the love, laughter, and fellowship I was blessed to be a part of that day. The hardest thing is knowing that these are all memories. Despite my heartbreak I try to remember the things that you would try to make us realize if you were still here. You were always easygoing, laughing, smiling, and joking. I think you would agree with me when I say that this world needs more love and compassion and not another bitter heart. We promised each other that we would both do our best to take care of Sarah, and I intend to keep that promise. I promise to keep your memory alive and to live for you and those who were taken from us all too soon and to be a better person to my fellow man. You are so loved and so missed each and every day. You will never be forgotten and will live on in all of the lives you impacted.

At the Veterans' Day parade this past week the children passed out flags to the vets. I am giving you this candle instead to let you know that you are on our minds each day, not just Veterans' Day. Each time I see a flag or a uniform or even that matter a Nebraska sticker I think of you and how much all of us miss you. Be with us all as we approach the one year anniversary that forever changed our lives.

Still missing you son! Your picture was amongst the many here at the mall in Sierra Vista this week. I hadn't been there since Christmas and something drew me to the military display in the middle of the mall- only to find that it was the Arizona tribute to our fallen. Your loss is personal.

I went to college at Nebraska with Philip. We had a number of classes together, and he was always so polite and kind. We were mostly friends because of classes, and We went to a few house parties together. You should be very proud. He was an incredibly stand up guy. I cannot imagine the pain his family and his wife are going through. Thank you to Philip and to his family for the sacrifices you have to continue to make every day.

Three months on and the mere thought of you being gone still brings tears and a gut wrenching hurt. I don't know how to think of you in the past, in my heart you're still here, just not HERE. I'm doing my best to be there for your mom, your family, there's just nothing I can do to make this better, to make this not BE. Just know that you're loved and missed so very much, every single day. When I watch the sun come up, I think of you. When I watch the stars come out, I think of you. When I see a Soldier, I think of you. I know one day I'll see you again, till then, Semper Fi Philip. Rest and know the peace and joy of your daily communion with the Most High!
Love you, you're forever in my heart,

We were so honored to have known Philip. He had the most infectious smile and such a well mannered young man. I still remember how he would pull up in his car and pull into the neighbors drive back up and park just perfect in front of their house. It is so hard to believe he is gone. It breaks my heart to think of the pain that his wife, mom, dad and siblings are going through. We know that he is with God watching over his loved ones. I pray daily for all of you all. Philip gave all for us. He is a HERO and we will not let him be forgotten. God Bless you all.

There are no words to take away or ease the pain of losing your loved one. May the precious memories of your loved one be a comfort to you now. At night the brightest star is him shining down on you, when you feel the wind on your cheek it is a kiss from Philip, the loudest bird singing will be him, he will forever be in your heart. May it help to know that you are not alone many thoughts are with you in your time of sorrow. May you find peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Thank you Philip for your service and dedication to the United States by paying the ultimate sacrifice so that we may have the freedoms in this country that others do not. Thank you for my freedom. Rest Easy Marine.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to LCpl. Philip Daine McGeath our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Phil. And to Phil it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the supreme sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Phil, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,307 Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Phil's family and loved ones. Semper Fidelis !
