Ronald Murphy Obituary

Ronald Charles Murphy Jr. of Phoenix, AZ, passed away peacefully Friday, December 9, 2005. He was born August 26th, 1926, in Augusta, ME. Ron's strength of character was shaped through challenges in his early years, which propelled him to many great achievements through
out his life. With $26.00 in his pocket, Ron left Maine in 1945 to work for Fred Harvey, arriving at Bright Angel Lodge in Grand Canyon, AZ in 1948. In 1952, he served in the Korean war as a Counter Intelligence agent for the United States Army. While there, Ron volunteered at the Irish Catholic Mission helping those displaced by the war. After his discharge in 1955, he was proud to attend Arizona State University using the Veteran's Bill of Rights, he earned highest Honors of Distinction when he received his Bachelor's of Education in 1957, and his Master's of Education Administration in 1959. At this time, Ron married Kathryn Kueny, and had a daughter, Mary Kathleen. Katie preceded him in death in 1970. He married Dr. Mary Sugrue, and along with her daughter, Mary the four of them lived, traveled, and shared many happy years. Two of Ron's greatest passions were supporting Education and Veteran's rights. He taught history at Washington H. S. in the Glendale Unified High School District and in 1963, he became an Administrator, rising to Assistant Superintendent. He helped develop special programs for career education, Indian education and drop out prevention. Ron joined the American Legion Glendale Post 29 and went on to become Post Commander, then State Commander in 1970. In 1991, Ron was Elected National Vice Commander of the American Legion. Additional honors bestowed include: Province Chairman of Arizona-New Mexico Catholic Students in Public Universities; for which he was a recipient of the John Henry Cardinal Newman Award; Chairman of the Westside United Fund; Cofounder Glendale Historical Society; Legislative Chairman of the Arizona School Administrators Association Westside Unit President and State Legislative Chairman of the Arizona Association of School Retirees and Glendale Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year. Ron was named to the Arizona Veteran's Hall of Fame, and he was recognized by the National Retired Teachers Association for community service. He served as legislative advocate for Veteran's in various Local, State and National capacities, supporting the Unified Arizona Veteran's, the Arizona State Veterans Home and the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona up to his death. Ron was a devoted and loving family man who instilled his passion for learning, laughing and a love of travel in his grandchildren. He was ever present to ensure that life was an adventure, both fun and educational, for his entire family. Ron is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary; two daughters, Mary Kathleen Boss, and Mary Ashley; son-in-law, Bruce Boss; and six grandchildren, Chelsey Boss, Angelo Boss, Ronald Boss, Kyle Boss, Kevin Ashley and Michael Ashley. He will be missed dearly, deeply and daily. His good work will continue through all of us. Funeral services will be held at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church 3140 N. 51st Ave., Phoenix on Friday, December 16, 2005 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Arrangements handled by Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the All Arizona School Retirees Association (NRTA) Scholarship Fund 302 N 1st Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85003. (602) 253-5597.

Grandpa I sit here and think that I cant believe its been 7 years since you left us and how much has changed....you would be so proud of all of us!!! I am now married and have a little munchkin you would love! He is an absolute hoot and wish you were here to be his "history go-to",weekend cartoon buddy and have your "Where in the world are Grandma and Grandpa?" maps to follow you on your trips. You would love my husband Jonathan...he is the most wonderful man! He also had a military background and his family lives in Colonial Williamsburg..talk about a history area :) Angelo is almost all done at Grand Canyon University and is getting ready for a new adventure in Pharmacy school. He is a wonderful young man and you would be so proud. JoJo is in basic training for the AirForce and although he has had his fair share of ups and downs, he finally found his nitch! He is so much more grounded and mature now and you probably wouldnt believe how much he has calmed down. Kyle just graduated highschool in May and worked the summer with Jo harvesting sround the South West. Mom and Dad are still the most amazing parents any kid could ask for. Dad is almost to retirement and mom is still loving teaching. What I wouldnt give to call you and update you on our lives!! I am so sorry for taking advantage of the time we had together but please know how much I love and miss you on a daily basis!! I remember the wonderful times in the pool, having waffles, going fishing in Sedona, laughing, watching cartoons and enjoying time with you. I hope you are proud of me and the woman I have become and will continue to be our guardian angel as we all set out for new chapters in our lives. I love you so so so so so so much!!!!!

Hey Grandpa,
Stopping in again to just let you know that you have touched my life and remain a HUGE inspiration to not only me but every other human being you have come in contact with. You were the brightest individual I knew with such a big heart. I strive to continue my studies as I hope to one day be nearly as intelligent as the man you were. I am continuing on to Grand Canyon University to complete my Bachelors in Biology with an emphasis on pharmaceutical sciences. Everytime Jeopardy comes on the television, it never fails that I always murmur, "Gosh, Grandpa should have been on here!" And then I begin to remember you yelling at the t.v. when someone got the wrong answer and I would sit and laugh because what seemed like an impossible question to most was but an elementary question to you. I know the good Lord has taken care of you and that you continue to take care of all those you love. Grandpa I brag about you every single day with any chance that I get. You are a legend not only in my mind but to all those who were lucky enough to admire all of your accomplishments.
I love you and miss you so much.
Angelo

Grandpa it seems like yesterday you would fling me aruond in the pool from the shallow end to the deep end because i was to scared to jump off the diving board. I miss our phone coversation we would have with you even if it was one question or if we just wanted to see how you were it would turn into an hour long conversation i did'nt like it at first but now i miss it i still love you.

Dearest Daddy,

I miss you so very very much. Each day does not get easier as they said it would.....I miss our twice and three times daily phone calls, I miss your laughter, your corny jokes and your "I love yous". I hope people will remember what an honorable and kind man you were. I hope that you will live on in your glorious grandchildren and all that you taught them. Thank you dear Daddy for all you did for me, never giving up on me, and always pushing me to be my personal best. I hope to be able to manage this life with your inspiration. You are the very best Daddy ever and no matter how old I get I will always be Daddys little girl. When the days are difficult I pretend I am little and dancing on your feet again......swirling without a care....and you are there. I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living My Daddy you'll be! Mary K.
