William McNamara Obituary

William Ben "Bill" McNamara, 81, an Army Veteran of World War II passed away Friday, June 17, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Bill was born in Emmetsburg, Iowa to Jessie and William J. McNamara. His college career at the University of Iowa was interrupted in 1944, when he entered the U.S. Army. He was a Medic in the 2nd Platton, "M" Company, 120th Infantry, 30th Division, and landed in Normandy in June of 1944. For his bravery in combat Bill was awarded the Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. Upon returning to the United States, he married the love of his life, Martha Ryan McNamara. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Advertising. He returned to his hometown to run the family business, Ryan Furniture. In 1960, the family moved to Scottsdale so Bill could pursue his chosen profession, Advertising and Marketing. During his years in Arizona, Bill worked for several advertising and media companies, including Advertising Counselors of Arizona, KTAR Radio, KJJR Radio and Owens Advertising. Bill and Martha were very active in several civic organizations including The Lions Club, Phoenix VFW, Post #75, and Civitans Club. They especially enjoyed writing and performing in the Annual Scottsdale Follies for several years. Bill and Martha also became active in the creation of Scottsdale Community College in 1972. When Bill retired, he was asked by the Dean of Students to use his advertising and marketing skills to promote higher education for valley students. Bill always said his second career was the most fulfilling of his professional life. As part of his marketing persona, he would visit the local high schools dressed entirely in Green. The students were inspired by his wit and sense of humor, and he became known to them as "Mr Green." Bill was very proud of the fact that he was a positive influence on the careers of hundreds of students. The City of Phoenix issued an Official Proclamation for "Bill McNamara Day" on April 10, 2005. Bill is survived by wife of 58 years, Martha; son, Michael and wife Mary McNamara of Phoenix, AZ; son Jerry and wife Jean McNamara of Mission Hills, Kansas; grandchildren Bevin, Ryan, Ben, Drew, and Michael Andrew; and sister Vergene Farrington of Phoenix. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, June 20 at 10:00 AM at St. Gabriel The Arc Angel Church, 32648 N. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek. Interment with full Military Honors at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the McNamara Scholarship Fund of Scottsdale Community College, 9000 E. Chaparral, Scottsdale, AZ 85256.

What a loss.

Martha challenged me to a blind date when I was teaching in Emmetsburg. That was 46 years ago and we are still together. It was Bill that hired me for the job in the first place. Thanks. Would love to get together sometime. Love, Pat & Bruce
