Daniel Julien

Daniel Joseph Julien, PhD of Cottonwood, formerly Flagstaff died Friday morning February 12, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family: Paul and Angela, Phoenix; Timothy and Judith, Phoenix; Mark and Carol, Flagstaff. Dan had been receiving medical care for Pulmonary Fibrosis and recently for a minor stroke sustained in a fall at his home. Dan was predeceased by his wife of 61 years Jane Abigail Pierce Julien. His brother Douglas lives in Michigan.

Dan and Jane, born in Michigan in 1932 were educators, friends of Flagstaff for 50 years, world travelers, and people of family. Dr. Dan was Professor Emeritus at Northern Arizona University. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Kappa. Dan was a Silver Beaver recipient by the Boy Scouts of America. Dan was Santa in Christmas parades for several years riding a red sleigh provided by Flagstaff Fire Department. He and Jane were volunteers at Flagstaff Medical Center. Dan and Jane established Sister Cities for Flagstaff in Barnaul, Russia; Manzanillo, Mexico; City of the Blue Mountains, Australia; and Xindian, Taiwan. Their travels took them to 50 states with their three children and years of exploration at Lake Powell in their boat "Paradox." They viewed Olympic Games in Sarajevo and Calgary, and visited international destinations from the northern tip of Norway to New South Wales, Australia with time spent in Japan, Europe, the British Isles, and all Canadian Provinces. The Doctors Julien recorded an oral history housed in NAU's Cline Library Special Collections.Jane and Dan (Grammy and Grandad) are dearly loved by their extended family of five grandchildren: Wende, Francie, Jessica, Emily Musta, Adam and ten great grandchildren. The family of Beli, Sharon, Tara, Dena, Emma Merdovic hold a dear place in their hearts.

The Julien family is obliged to Maggies Hospice Palliative Care Services, Cottonwood Fire Department and A Caring Place Adult Day Services Comprehensive Care Management Advisors. Dan and Jane established the Drs. Daniel J. and Jane A. Pierce Julien Scholarship, Fund Number 01519 at Northern Arizona University.

Prayers and love for Grandad have been and continue to be a blessing. He is vital in all our lives. His favorite poem was Tennyson's "Ulysses." With Grammy, his passage now is to, "Push off, and sitting well in order smite the sounding furrows; for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset, and the baths of all the western stars."

Julien family, Mom, Vickie , and I and our families are so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. We will always remember him as Santa as he entered our houses to bring cheer. Mom and I saw are so thankful to have been able to see him recently at his home in Cottonwood. Dr. Julien was a very important and special person in my life. I first met him in 1968. He was my teacher, advisor, cheerleader. He gave me the confidence to speak in front of others. As a teacher I used many thing Dr. Julien taught me with my students. I am very thankful that we were able to reconnect at NAU. I always looked forward to seeing him at the scholarship reception. Your parents were a very special couple that brought love, support and guidance to so many. So glad they touched my life!

Dan and Jane opened their home to Beli and brought him in as family thereby blessing our lives with the entire Julien family and the life Beli and I have created for our family. The love and kindness they gave has touched so many lives. This unconditional gift of love just keeps giving. This is an example of who we all should be in every moment of our lives. In Dan and Janes memory let us all remind ourselves of the fruits of unconditional love. Dan is the patriarch who's example we hope to remember and follow. Thank you for all your blessings my dear angel in heaven.
