Manuel Vallejos Obituary

Manuel Vallejos June 23, 1920 – August 25, 2013

Manuel Vallejos born in Las Cruces, New Mexico on June 23, 1920 to Andres and Vivianita Vallejos, the oldest of ten children, preceded in death by his wife of fifty five years, Grace Jojola Vallejos; son Daniel Vallejos; brothers Isidro Vallejos, Raymond Vallejos, Andres Jr. Vallejos and sister Josie Healy.

As a young man, Manuel worked on a one hundred thirty five acre farm where his family made a living in Polvadera, New Mexico on the Rio Grande River north of Socorro, New Mexico. He attended high school in Socorro, New Mexico. He was then drafted into the US Army in 1941 and served at Camp Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas and Camp Detrick, Frederick, Maryland. He also was a member of the New Mexico Army National Guard. In 1951 he worked Civil Service at the Navajo Army Depot, Bellemont, Arizona. In 1971 he was transferred to Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center, Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Manuel retired in 1983; during retirement he worked part time and enjoyed his occupations as a school crossing guard, night watchman, butcher, pizza creator and camp cook.

In the early 1960's Manuel coached the Flagstaff Little League Cardinals with three generations following his influence. During the 1950's and 1960's he played on a traveling fast pitch softball team. Manuel never met a stranger; he shared proud memories of his family, his passion for hunting, fishing, sports and good food, particularly green chili. We all knew him as an individual of sociable conversation.

He is survived by brothers Johnny Vallejos, Jimmie Vallejos; sisters Christine Garcia, Susie Clubb, Della Celentano; sons Manuel (Cheryl) Vallejos, Mario Christopher (Becky) Vallejos, Gregory (Hanh) Vallejos; daughters Delaida (Bill) Simms, Shirley Vallejos, Monica (Mike) Bryant, Judith(Doug) Amos, twenty nine grandchildren, thirty six great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces.

Memorial services will be held at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel, 16 W. Cherry Avenue, Flagstaff, AZ 86001 on Thursday, August 29, 2013; Rosary at 2:30 pm and Mass at 3:00 pm.
