As a young man, Manuel worked on a one hundred thirty five acre farm where his family made a living in Polvadera, New Mexico on the Rio Grande River north of Socorro, New Mexico. He attended high school in Socorro, New Mexico. He was then drafted into the US Army in 1941 and served at Camp Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas and Camp Detrick, Frederick, Maryland. He also was a member of the New Mexico Army National Guard. In 1951 he worked Civil Service at the Navajo Army Depot, Bellemont, Arizona. In 1971 he was transferred to Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center, Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Manuel retired in 1983; during retirement he worked part time and enjoyed his occupations as a school crossing guard, night watchman, butcher, pizza creator and camp cook.
In the early 1960's Manuel coached the Flagstaff Little League Cardinals with three generations following his influence. During the 1950's and 1960's he played on a traveling fast pitch softball team. Manuel never met a stranger; he shared proud memories of his family, his passion for hunting, fishing, sports and good food, particularly green chili. We all knew him as an individual of sociable conversation.
