Nichole Alexis Alex was born in Gallup, NM, on March 19, 1985, and was Ásh??hi (Salt Clan) nish??, Ta'neeszahnii (Tangle Brush) bashishchiin, Totsohnii (Big Water) dashicheii, T?ááschí\'í (Red Bottom) dashinalí. A devoted wife, mother, and fierce advocate for Native American communities, she passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. She was a strong Diné Asdzáán, filled with deep compassion and unwavering strength, dedicating her life to justice, service, and the well-being of others.
Her advocacy work made a lasting impact, and her ability to lead with courage and empathy inspired all who knew her. Beyond her professional legacy, she was the heart of her family, an incredible partner, and a loving, guiding presence for her son, Rey Mato, who carries forward her spirit and values.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. A viewing service will be held on June 6th at 9 a.m. at Greers Mortuary, located at 1505 W. 3rd St., Winslow, AZ 86047. Graveside services will follow at 10 a.m. at Desert View Cemetery, located at 1200 W. Flemming St., Winslow, AZ 86047. A reception will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 101 E. Hillview St., Winslow, AZ 86047.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a yet-to-be-created endowed scholarship for Indigenous students whose career pursuits include advocacy for Indigenous communities, environmental justice, juvenile justice, children's law, or public policy work at the University of Arizona.
