Charles Spickler Obituary

CHARLES ROBERT SPICKLER

September 6, 1934 – January 16, 2025

Bakersfield – Bob was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Glenn and Gretchen Spickler. He grew up the son of a carpenter and learned building skills he would continue to use his entire life. The family moved west, arriving in California December 7, 1941. Bob was the fourth of seven children, he had four brothers and two sisters. Bob went to KCUHS and Bakersfield College. He married Marlene in 1953, they welcomed their first of four children in 1955. He worked as a journeyman for the Carpenters local 743 and a number of other construction jobs in his younger years including roofing, Formica, aluminum siding and aluminum screens.

In 1964 he achieved his dream of owning his own restaurant. He and Marlene opened The Sizzler Steak House on Oak St. Later he worked with his daughter Charlene at Blimpie and his son Michael at Charley's Chili Burgers.

In his retirement Bob took great joy spending time with his grandkids and many of the kids in his neighborhood. Known for his kindness and work ethic he completed countless woodworking projects that touched the lives of many.

Dad was preceded in death by his brothers Glenn, Dale, Don, Paul and his sister Glendolyn. He is survived by his sister Mary Kaye Brady (Jem), children Brenda Wright (Ed), Michael (Susan), Duane (Jonie), and Jolyn Cleveland (John), 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends.

Our family would like to thank the staff at The Palms assisted living facility for the love and care they showed him the last couple of years.

A memorial will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 11am at St. John's Lutheran Church, 4500 Buena Vista Rd.

for his family, it's sad to hear of your dads passing and i'm sorry. there is few that fill our hearts our whole lives and the "dad" spot (mom too) seem most grieved in their passing. memories are awesome but by enlarge no match to the real deal. this man was definitely the real deal!
we knew "Bob" as our neighbor. say about 10 years at least. very very interesting and when he moved wow is all i can say as to his many suppressed talents. a whole lifetime packed away in that house! i remember when we first moved in i found myself writing a card to him apologizing for my barking dogs, it was shortly after that and a few blasts with an air horn..an easy fix for a lifetime of troublesome barking...they shut up on sight..made me think yep "older and wiser"...he many times in chit chat at our fence left me thinking, did he really do all those things only to realize this man had been many places and done many things. it was an honor, to listen to him (and his brother)and i found them both to make me laugh lots! so it's sad to hear, and ya know i've missed him since he's moved, thought of him regularly! i know God places people in my life for reasons and lessons to be learned! and even if i was a simple fix to dogs barking...that was simple success. so with my heart heavy too i know of the passing of a man who's life pathed a path for many . take care everyone!
