DARREN PAUL SCOTT
September 29, 1967 May 17, 2023
Bakersfield Our beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, Darren Paul Scott, was called home by the Lord on May 17, 2023. He was surrounded by his wife and sons who loved on him until his peaceful passing. Darren's promotion to heaven leaves a tremendous void on earth, and he is already very missed by his family and countless friends.
Darren was born to Larry Dean Scott and Doris Christine Scott on September 29, 1967 in Bakersfield, CA, but it was Arvin, CA that would always be his hometown. He was big brother to sister Shannon, and they enjoyed a relationship that grew richer with each passing year. Darren's mother passed just one month before him, and it comforts us to know she was there to welcome him into his eternal home.
Darren loved growing up in a small community. The friendships that were formed throughout his childhood created lifelong bonds. Every single friend of Darren's was important to him, whether they met 50 years ago or five days ago.
Darren was an Arvin High School Bear through and through, graduating in 1985. It was there that he met Cheryl, his high school sweetheart, then wife of 33 years. Their life together was filled with love and adventure. They liked to travel together, including regular trips to the coast, exploring national parks as a family, and more recently discovering Germany and Italy. He loved meeting up with friends to play bunco or other family games, traveling to Dodger games (or hosting watch parties in the backyard), and celebrating any occasion that could be celebrated! As much as he enjoyed socializing, though, he and Cheryl also soaked in the sweet contentment of quiet time shared together at home.
Throughout his life, Darren was happiest when he was outdoors. Darren was an excellent shot, and from a young age, he developed a love for shooting trap and hunting. He was a patient fisherman and he was there to offer guidance and help when his sons caught their first trout in Bishop, and more recently their first marlin in Cabo San Lucas. He discovered his love and talent for golf in high school and continued to play throughout his life, making many friends on the course and playing in tournaments with friends and family.
When Jacob and Zachary were born in 1993 and 1996, life became more meaningful than Darren could imagine. He was a natural father from the beginning and embraced all the joys and challenges that come with parenting. He was active in all that his sons did, and he coached many of their baseball teams throughout the years. He was most happy when those little league teams were assigned the name Dodgers (and he bemoaned the year he drew the name Giants!).
The only thing better than raising two boys was watching them become amazing men. Darren savored every moment with them as they grew to be his best friends (and vice-versa).
Life changed for Darren in December 2003 when he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He took seriously his commitment to be a follower of Jesus and he relished so many friendships with people he and Cheryl met through their small groups. He led by example, as a man who loved God and cared deeply for the people whose lives he touched.
After he started South Valley Electrical Contractors in 2004, Darren managed life as a business owner with grace. His ethics were above reproach, and he was a mentor, friend, and even a father-figure to many on his team over the years.
Darren was a survivor from an early age. He battledand beatHodgkins Lymphoma when he was just 8-years-old. The radiation treatment that saved his life later resulted in worsening damage to his heart and lungs. Darren made the most of each of his years, and those who loved him are grateful for every moment.
Darren was preceded in death by his mother Christine Scott, his stepmother Laura Scott, his mother-in-law Melba Harris, and his stepbrother Kevin Breedlove. His passing leaves behind many to mourn his loss, including Cheryl, Jacob (Christina), and Zachary Scott; father Dean Scott; sister Shannon Scott (Ali); stepfather Wayne Crumpley and stepsisters Terry Ousley (Scott), Sandy Gouden, and Trisha Crumpley; stepbrother Steve Breedlove; father-in-law Ed Harris; and many other beloved family members and friends. Darren's was a life well-lived. Those who knew and loved him will forever be affected by the influence he had on our lives.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on May 30, 2023 at Hillcrest Memorial Park (9101 Kern Canyon Road). A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 31, 2023 at The Bridge Bible Church (12225 Stockdale Hwy.), followed by a 12:30 p.m. burial at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
