DEBORAH LYNN DEL PAPA
December 25, 1950 - May 13, 2021
She entered a room with that brilliant Debi Del Papa smile. It's probably the first thing you all remember about her. It could brighten your day. And it was genuine.
Debi was born on Christmas morning, 1950, and she lived her life in Old River, California. She passed away in San Luis Obispo on May 13, 2021 after a tragic accident while visiting her favorite place, Pismo Beach.
Debi was a true farmer's daughter, and she loved her country life. She attended Lakeside Elementary and West High Schools, Bakersfield College and Cal Poly, after which she began her 32-year career as a teacher. She spent most of her years helping young children learn, primarily at Buena Vista Elementary, where she began teaching kindergarten through third grade at what was then a little country school. As Bakersfield grew, the little school grew, and she ended her career with her favorite children, those in kindergarten. She was a wonderful teacher, who lovingly but firmly got those children off to a good start in life.
When her son, Bernard, was born, Debi seamlessly moved into her primary role of mother. She was an amazing mother, putting Bernard above all else in her life. Debi was so proud of him, and to this day, she truly would light up when he was near. But all of that changed slightly three years ago, when her sweet and sassy granddaughter, Betty Violet, was born. She was the newest and brightest light of her life, and everything Debi did was with Betty at the front of her mind. Even Bernard took a back seat to Betty! And of course, Debi's relationship with her sister, Pati, and her mother was beyond the norm. The three were always and everywhere together.
Creativity was abundant in Debi's life. She was exceptionally talented and meticulously paid attention to every single detail while creating beauty all around her. That talent could be seen everywhere, from the decorating in her house to her beautiful and lush country yard.
Debi's faith was especially important to her. And she will be remembered for her kindness, loyalty, and loving care. As many of you reading this are aware, she remembered all occasions or gifts with a personalized, hand-written note. And during the past year, while dealing with her cancer diagnosis and treatment, Debi maintained that trademark smile, always upbeat, never letting others know of her difficulties, but instead asking about their lives, and always remaining positive. She was truly special.
Debi will be lovingly remembered by her father and mother Frank and Evelyn, her sister Pati, her son Bernard and his wife Diana, her granddaughter Betty, and one more grandchild to be arriving at any time. She was preceded in death by her little brother Frankie, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family is forever grateful to Debi's dear friends for their kindness, their thoughtfulness, and their prayers, too many to mention here.
A Rosary service will be celebrated in memory of Debi on June 25th at 9:30 AM at St Francis Catholic Church, 900 H Street, in Bakersfield, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Dear Evelyn, Frankie, Pati and family, My heart is broken! I only heard of Debi's passing today. My cousins assumed I knew. I had just sent a card to Debi to tell her I was thinking of her and she was already gone! Evelyn and Pati you were always with Debi when I'd see you! You three and Frankie had so much love to give! Evelyn you loved my mom like she was your big sister and I always appreciated that! Our memories together go back to the 1940s when I lived across the Taft Hwy from the Rossi's. You all were loved by all of us Destefani's. When Debi arrived for first day of Kindergarten at Lakeside school she was so cute! I had taken my camera to take my own pictures of my classmates and I took a picture of Debi because she was like a little doll! Over the years when I came across that photo, I would start smiling and remembering how shy and excited she was that day. I watched both she and you Pati, grow into wonderful, kind and thoughtful women! Your bond for each other was unique! I didn't know many siblings who continued a loving relationship which each other as adults...nothing such as yours. I saw the kind of teacher Debi became and she was everything a parent could hope for when their child was assigned to her class. As the years flew by, my parents moved from Old River to Pismo but you Pati and your sister made the effort to bring your mom there to see my mom. Every conversation with you all was laughter, hugs, warm remembrances, and lots of love. Your friendship is so dear to me..to all my relatives...to lose Debbie is like a knife to our hearts. May she continue to be that wonderful daughter, sister, mother, and friend and bring to all of you a joyful feeling when you think of her everyday! My love to you! Linda

I remember going over to Debi's house when Bernard was little. Since we didn't live in Bakersfield we only visited maybe once or twice a year, but I remember running around outside and Debi was always so very nice and sweet to us. I will always remember her big smile and laugh.
Bernard, Diana, Pati, and Mr. & Mrs. Del Papa I am so very sorry for your loss. Her spirit lives on in her son and grandchildren. All my Love. Nicky

I knew Debi as a life long friend as a neighboring farmer's daughter during our youth, a fellow school mate at Lakeside Elementary and West High school, a fellow parishioner at Sacred Heart Church and an ongoing link to memories that will always bring light to my days. My prayers and love will be ever present for her family and all who loved her. And in keeping with Debi's spirit of joy and happiness I trust she is embracing another world of amazing beauty and peace and doing there what she did here...presenting her gift of ongoing genuine goodness. ❤

Mrs. Del Papa was my kindergarten teacher. I’m now 22 years old. She was one of the best teachers I ever had. When I was 19, back home in Bakersfield from college I ran into her at Walmart. I told her who I was and she knew immediately that I was little Karigan Owens from her kindergarten class. I’m so sad to hear she has passed but will always remember the light she was in my life
