Doris Riese McFarland passed away at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018, at her residence in Salinas, CA.
She was born Doris Mae Riese on July 25, 1926 in San Francisco, CA to her father, Wallis Richard Riese and mother Mabel Elvina Twede. She had one sibling, Wallis Richard Riese, Jr.
Known as Dorie to friends and family, she was raised in San Anselmo, CA and graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1943. She graduated from Mills College, Oakland, CA in 1948 with a major in Music Education, where she won an intercollegiate prize for musical composition. Dorie married Myron Boyd McFarland, Jr. on June 26, 1948 and raised a family of five children together in Myron's hometown of McFarland, CA, where she was active in various community organizations, and as a substitute teacher. In 1974 Myron and Dorie relocated to Monterey, CA.
Dorie was a piano teacher, McFarland Methodist church choir leader, church organist, and was a member of community choral groups in Bakersfield and Carmel. Dorie loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, camping, and fishing with her family.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses; James (Sandra) McFarland, McFarland, CA; Donald (Yoshiko) McFarland, Seattle, WA; Douglas (Lisa) McFarland, Salinas, CA; Laurie (Don) Jackson, Riverbank, CA; Brian (Kathy) McFarland, Tehachapi, CA; along with 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93306.
