Gerry Collis Obituary

GERRY DEMOS COLLIS

June 3, 1930 January 24, 2024

Bakersfield Gerry Coach Collis was born in McGill, Nevada, and lived there for 18 years. McGill was a small town made up mostly of Greek immigrants. Gerry's biggest hero was his mother. He excelled a great deal in football, baseball, and basketball. Gerry spoke of his time in McGill as the greatest time of his life.

In 1948, Gerry attended Denver University on a football scholarship.

In 1952, he was drafted by the N.Y. Yankee organization to play minor league baseball. This was interrupted in 1953 by a draft notice from the U.S. Army.

During Gerry's army service, he was assigned to Special Services, which enabled him to play baseball all around the country.

By 1956, Gerry was able to return to professional baseball, taking up with the Winston Salem Twins. It was in Winston that he met his future wife, Vula.

In 1957, Gerry spent a bit of time with family in Las Vegas, teaching and coaching. It was there that he heard about a coaching job in Bakersfield. Once he was hired, he was then able to fly back to North Carolina to marry Vula. This was July 28, 1957.

In August, Gerry started as football coach and head baseball coach at Bakersfield College. In 1967, he became head football coach, and no longer coached baseball. He remained head coach until 1983. Coach's success has often been measured not in number of victories or championships, but in the great impact he had on young men's lives.

Throughout this time (and longer), Gerry and Vulaand three daughterswere dedicated members of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Gerry was a fixture on the church board (serving as president more than once), also a regular member of the kitchen crew, which cooked at every event: weddings, Easter, Greek Festival, etc.

From 1984-2012, Gerry continued to work as Director of the Bakersfield College Athletic Foundation. The job was created specifically for him because of his personable nature and his genuine way of dealing with people. Also, though, it was the unbelievably large number of people that knew and respected Gerry that paved the way. His fundraisers became not only well-known and trendy traditions around town, but they raised record-breaking amounts of money.

These years also afforded Gerry some extra time to golf, which he enjoyed immensely.

Gerry's first priority has always been his family. There was nothing he enjoyed more than hanging out with his kids. He was famous around the house for making home-made milkshakes after dinner. Gerry also loved taking the family to Shakey's Pizza after every Renegade game. The same tradition applies to the grandchildren, whether it's picking them up from school or taking them golfing.

His daughter, Elaine, once asked him, Dad, I heard you're getting an award next week. He replied, Listen, none of that stuff means anything. The only thing that matters is your family. Don't ever forget that.

Gerry is survived by his daughter, Elaine Collis, grandsons Steve Cereghino and John Lyles, and son-in-law Ernie Lyles.

Gerry was preceded in death by: his wife Vula Chamis Collis, daughters Penny Lyles and Georgia Collis, mother Panayota Collis, and father, Stavros Demos. In addition: his brothers John Demos, Tom Collis, Angelo Collis, Chris Collis, and sisters Helen Kearns, Georgia Newman, Deanie Pope, and May McFall.

Trisagion service will be Tuesday, February 13, from 6:00-6:30 p.m. St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 401 Truxtun, 93301. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 14, at 10:00 a.m. (Greek Church). Graveside service following funeral (Wednesday), approximately 12:30 p.m. at Greenlawn, River Blvd. Reception following, family and friends. Rio Bravo Golf Club.

Feel so fortunate to have the honor of knowing Coach Collis from my days at BC. I will never forget having lunches with him at Woolgrowers. He shared so many of his memories of Spring Training with the Yankees and the likes of Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Billy Martin.
He would share stories of his youth and love of Bakersfield. He would always greet me with a loud, "Mark so good to see you, worst first baseman in Renegade History!"
It felt special that he felt close enough to joke with me like that.
Cherish this picture I was able to take with my kids and coach at Woolgrowers.

Coach Collis was not only a great coach, he was that rare individual who never forgot a person no matter his or her position in life.
Each time I saw him, at a funeral or at Woolgrowers, he always remembered me and said hello. May he rest in peace. He has so many family and dear friends ready to welcome him to heaven´s field of winners!

Remembering Coach Gerry Collis:

As a back on the 1963 and 1964 Renegade football teams, I was fortunate to interact a lot with Coach Collis who at the time was the backfield coach. As players, we focused on his lessons concerned with football but came to realize the subtle and sometimes not so subtle connection he was making to lessons in life.

In my personal life and work in domestic and international operations, Coach's mantra, "Hit and Fly Until You Die" was always a positive presence with me. I coveted the few times I later got to visit with him and introduce him to my family. It was always a marvel to watch Coach interact with people and see the exchange of love and respect. Coach is now Flying!

Great man. Always looked up to him. Always went to visit him at his house and his medical facility. Sharp mind all the way to the end. Best football coach I ever had. Nicknamed me lippy and it stood up to this day. Going to miss him and loved him very much.

Dear GOD, We, and all of us who were, and are still forever, under his wings are so very sad to learn of Gerry's passing!

Just before receiving this news, I was thinking about Coach, as I do often, knowing he was not doing well, and praying for him. This breaks our hearts. Theresa and I are holding onto our tears right now, having lit a candle for him.

Remember vividly his sweet presence at my retirement dinner roasting in 2008, captivating everyone with his quick and funny wit about shared baseball experiences.

Coach Collis, as he did for so many, helped shape my character about teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work ethics, and the value of deep, lasting friendships!

May our dearly beloved Coach rest in eternal peace in his Heavenly paradise...
we will meet again, with Faith, Hope, and LOVE!

Last September after my reason collision I was in a rehabilitation center that was shared with a senior living. Getting there I was greeted one day while making my rounds in my walker by a man they call COACH. He insisted he knew me from a team he coached against. I told him I never played sports. He said, "Kid it´s never too late."
Me being in my early 50´s I told him I´m past my days. He laughed and said he could help get me back on the field. I just went with it and every day I passed him in the halls or dining room he always encouraged me. As I progressed he would say "see you're on your come back." After I got my walking back and use of my hand I was discharged from rehab. I still went back to visit the resident and staff a couple times a month. COACH always had a story and an encouraging word to put in my ear. It broke my heart to learn of his passing. I´m just glad I got to meet COACH. Even up in age he was an amazing man. I´m glad to have met his daughter Elaine who was dedicated to spending time with dad and his grandson John who came out to bingo with him. My condolences to you two and the rest of your family. Eial be praying that God brings you comfort that COACH is on the correct side of eternity. I loaded a picture of my buddy. God bless~Manny

Gerry Collis was one of the most amazing persons that I have ever known in my life. I used to live right down the street from him.
