HALTA SPENCER

May 27, 1931 July 21, 2021

Halta Spencer passed away peacefully in Bakersfield on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. She was 90 years old and a long-time Bakersfield resident.

Halta was born in Talihina, Oklahoma on May 27, 1931 to William Arthur Branscum and Lilly Mary Branscum (Stewart). Her family moved to California during World War II and eventually settled in Bakersfield. In high school she worked at San Joaquin Community Hospital and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1949.

Halta married Shane Spencer in 1950, and they remained married for over 60 years until Shane's passing in 2011. For many years she was employed as a bookkeeper/account clerk, retiring from the County of Kern in 1989. In retirement, Halta enjoyed going to Shane's country music gigs and old-time fiddling contests. She also was a volunteer with Bakersfield Family Medical Center and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and many friends. As a young woman Halta accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior, and was a member of Valley Baptist Church. She was involved in a number of Church activities over the years, including the widows group and the prayer quilt ministry.

Halta is survived by her sons Kenneth (Lynette) of Sparks, Nevada and Glenn (Pamela) of Midland, Texas; grandchildren Andrew, Jamison (Ashlynn), Shane (Virginia), Meagan, and Luke (Caitlen); and by her great-granddaughter Charlotte. She is also survived by her brothers Doyle Branscum and Harrel Branscum, both of Bakersfield; sister Alma Chavez of Portland, Oregon; nieces Patrice, Kandy, Linda and Marian; and nephews Win, Kevin, Richard and Daucie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Shane, and brother Daucie Rose.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at Greenlawn (Northeast) Chapel, 3700 River Boulevard, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the chapel service commencing at 11:00 a.m. and a short graveside service to follow.

The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Villa Marie Home Care and Bristol Hospice.
