Mahmud Mohiuddin Sufi

1916 - 2002

Mahmud Sufi was born in Amritsar, India the son of noted Kashmiri historian and sub-continent educationist Dr. GMD Sufi and his wife Shafi Begum. He passed away in Bakersfield, California on Friday, June 28, 2002 where he lived with his wife Majida, son Najib and daughter-in-law Tahira.

Mahmud had been a banker in Pakistan and completed his service as Sr. Vice President at the National Bank of Pakistan. After retirement Mahmud authored several non-fiction paperbacks covering his passions particularly the topics of Kashmir and World Peace. After all the children moved to the U.S., Mahmud and Majida, an avid and practicing member of the Montessori education system also moved and lived with their sons in California, Ohio and Michigan.

Mahmud is remembered by his wife of 51 years Majida; sons, Najib, Nasir, Amer and Rashid, daughters-in-law, Tahira, Mariam, Saeema and Uzma. His loving grandchildren, Sabah, Osman, Shermeen, Omar, Aman, Rayhan, Amber and Muneeza all of whom he adored were all with him in the days before he returned to his Creator. He is also survived by his brother Cmdr. (Retd) Masud Sufi of Karachi, Pakistan. Mahmud was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Ahmed Sufi and sister, Mrs. Maimuna Butt of Karachi. Mahmuds warmth, sincerity, generosity and gentle personality will be missed by many. He would have been 86 on July 23. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.

Mahmud was laid to rest on Saturday at the Islamic Gardens Cemetery in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield with Imam Rashid of the Ming mosque leading the prayers and remembrance. Soyem prayers were held on Sunday at Masjid Al Farooq where Mahmud regularly attended the Juma and Taraweeh prayers before he was hospitalized. Imam Mohamed of Al-Azhar led the special prayers.

Special thanks to all the staff at Memorial, Mercy and San Joaquin Community and convalescent hospitals, Rebecca and Pamela from Kern County and the ever-caring friends from the local Masajid and community, to Aniq and Samina, to Br. Omar and Srs. Fatima, Saira, Hannah, Sarah, Andaleeb, Brenda and the families they represent for their profound kindness delivered on an almost daily basis.
