Martha Clare Winter
1929 - 2018
Martha passed away peacefully at a senior living community in Southern California on Monday, September 17, 2018. Martha was born in Bakersfield, CA, to parents Errol and Anita Clare. She graduated from Bakersfield High School and College of Holy Names in Oakland, CA.
In 1951, Martha's brother, Jack Clare introduced Martha to a fellow Superior Oil Company Geologist, Bill Winter. This initial encounter eventually lead to marriage in 1952. They had an extraordinarily loving relationship and wonderful life together, which included two children, Phil of San Diego, CA. and Mike of Temecula, CA.
Martha served many years of community service with Guild House and Assistance League of Bakersfield. Martha greatly enjoyed spirited rounds of golf and bridge table tournaments at Stockdale Country Club, cooking, traveling and visiting with friends and family.
In 2016, Bill and Martha, along with their spoiled dog Troonie, moved from their beloved Bakersfield home to Grossmont Gardens Assisted Living Campus in La Mesa, California. This move allowed Bill and Martha to spend their sunset years near their two sons, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all who visited them often. Nothing brought a bigger smile to Martha and Bill as when their family came over for an afternoon visit. Our family was blessed in these final years. It was gratifying that our family was able to spend time reminiscing and sharing memories while Bill and Martha lived in La Mesa.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Bill, (November 2016), her parents and brother; her grandson, Woody; and her great-granddaughter, Saylor Jane. Martha is survived by her sister, Jane Upp; two children, Phil and Mike (Jackie), two grandchildren Amy & Eric (Mandi); two great-granchildren, Lakelyn and Braxton; and numerous nieces, nephews and the pet dog, Troonie. Our mother and father were remarkable parents who will truly be missed, but we know now that they're together again sharing eternal peace. It was Mom's wish that there be no funeral services.
The Winter Family would like to say thanks for the exceptional care Mom was provided by Kaiser Permanente, Grossmont Gardens Assisted Living, Gentiva Hospice, Accent Care and Mom's special caregivers Liz, Dee and Julie plus so, so many others who kept a special loving and watchful eye on Mom. No family could ask for better loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local SPCA, Gentiva Hospice or to one's favorite charity.

Dear Winter family, I remember Martha's smile, beautiful eyes, humor, and easygoing demeanor. My mother-in-law, Ruby Hagenston, introduced us 30 years ago when I was a novice golfer and we had some of the best times playing together. Bill and Martha graciously sold their Volvo to my husband and me in our newlywed days in impeccable condition and a great price. She and Bill were just generous people! I'm praying that God will comfort you as only He can!

When I first started playing golf at Stockdale Martha was my mentor and friend as she was too many of us. I was privileged to be able to play with her in team play. There was a great competitive spirit packed into that sweet face and small stature
My condolences to your family. I hope Bill and Martha are playing a heavenly round of golf together again.
We all miss them.

When I first started playing golf at Stockdale, Martha was my mentor...as she was to many of our golfers. I often had the privilege of being her partner in team play...which was much better than being her opponent, because behind that sweet face and small stature lay a mighty competitive spirit.
My condolences to her family, and I hope she and Bill are enjoying a heavenly round of golf --- together again.
They are both missed at Stockdale.
