A. Brager Obituary

A. Stanley ("Tommy") Brager, Jr., of Baltimore, MD, passed away on Monday, October 14th, 2024, at the age of 94. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorah M. Brager (née Merz); devoted children, Susan Brager (Matt) Murphy and Stephen (Ellen J.) Brager; adored grandchildren, Ethan Murphy, Colin Murphy, Dominique Brager and Carolina Brager. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Lynn Brager; sisters, Nancy Katz and Dorothy Brager, and parents, A. Stanley and Reada Brager.

Tommy resided nearly his whole life in Baltimore. After attending The Park School, he spent the next four years at Harvard, with the vague aspiration of going into advertising. But soon after college, fate intervened, his father had a laryngectomy, and Tommy – being Tommy – stepped in to help his stockbroker father communicate with his clients, and so learned the business he would work in for the next 60 years. After joining and working for Stein Brothers and Boyce for two decades, he joined Shearson Hammill, where he worked (in its various incarnations after multiple mergers) for the next 40 years, retiring in 2015.

In 1957, he married Dody, with whom he would spend the next 67 years. With her, they had three children. Together, they enjoyed playing tennis, going to theater, attending symphony, and traveling, both to nearby locales and to far-flung destinations. As a younger adult, Tommy volunteered his time to the Jewish Big Brother Big Sister program, for whom he also served as president; after his retirement, he was a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Services at Sol Levinson's Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208, on Sunday, October 20th, 2024, at 1:00 pm. Interment Baltimore Hebrew Belair Road Cemetery. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Jennifer Lynn Brager Fund, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Attn: Michael Hibler, 750 E. Pratt St., Suite 1700, Baltimore, MD 21202. How many people receive a birthday card from their friend's FATHER every year for decades? That was the kind of man Tommy was--thoughtful, loving, kind. He remembered details and never failed to check in about how things in my life (and Mom's too) were going. Thoughts of him will always bring a smile to my face. Thinking of you all very much.

Good days and years with Tommy at JBB&SL Jewish Big Brother & Sister League. I was President prior to Tommy taking the reigns. We were both active in the league for many years. He was a great guy and will be blessed by G=d for his many good deeds, Rest in peace old friend!
