Barry Stout Obituary

Barry Lohmeyer Stout passed away at her home in Augusta, Georgia, after a prolonged illness. She was born on March 25, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland. After attending The Calvert School and The Bryn Mawr School, Barry spent a formative year at boarding school in Switzerland. She later attended the University of Colorado, where she developed her lifelong love of skiing. She continued her studies many years later at the University of Miami and then Augusta College.

Barry was introduced to Donnie, her husband of 55 years, at her sister Mary Anne's wedding, and they married shortly thereafter in Baltimore in 1962. They moved to Miami, Florida, in 1965, where they raised their family for 15 years. During their time in Miami, Barry was active in the community, serving in multiple leadership roles in the Junior League, volunteering with the American Heart Association and in her children's schools, and becoming an avid tennis player. She also developed a reputation as an excellent shot-dove hunting was a particular favorite.

Before moving to Augusta in 1979, Barry joined Donnie in completing the Burger King University and Whopper College training programs to support him as he began his work as a Burger King franchisee. After moving to Augusta, Barry took up golf, a pastime she enjoyed for decades. She also enjoyed her involvement with the Garden Club, the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Augusta Heritage Club, and the Colonial Dames.

In 1993, Barry and Donnie bought a second home in Boca Grande, Florida, which later became their primary residence. Barry loved being in the Florida sun and was happiest with a full house of family and friends-nothing made her smile more than seeing her children and grandchildren walk through the door. In Boca Grande, she found a meaningful church home at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where she served on both the flower guild and the wedding guild. Donnie predeceased her on July 4, 2017.

A central thread throughout Barry's life was Camp Merrie-Woode in Sapphire, North Carolina, where she spent her childhood summers. She stayed deeply connected to the camp throughout her life and served on the Camp Merrie-Woode Foundation board, becoming its first female chairman. Her leadership helped ensure that the camp stayed a meaningful place for future generations-including her own family, which now spans four generations at Camp Merrie-Woode.

Barry is survived by her sister, Mary Anne Cover; her three children, Barry Stout Kaminer (Jim), Anne Stout Hughes (Jeff), and Merrell Langdon Stout, III (Louise); eight grandchildren; two nieces; one great-niece; one great nephew and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, at a later date. Please contact the family for details. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name, may be made to the Camp Merrie-Woode Endowment Honoring Former Board Chairs.
