Charles Reis Obituary

Charles Louis ("Chip") Reis, Jr., passed away peacefully at the Riverspring Home in Riverdale, New York, early on Sunday, May 15, after a brave battle with Covid. Chip was born November 5, 1947, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late Charles Louis Reis, Sr., and Maureen Kilcullen Reis. Chip graduated with bachelor's and graduate degrees from St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore. During his service as a Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and always after, he was known to those he helped as "Father Chip." He selflessly and ceaselessly ministered to poor families, ex-offenders, recent immigrants, and many others in trouble who were hoping for a willing hand and ear; his outreach while working at Goodwill Industries was profiled in The Baltimore Sun. At the Riverspring Home since 2016, he continued his ministry in many diverse ways, founding and leading the Men's Discussion Group, greeting new residents, acting in and organizing plays and musicals, appearing as occasional co-host on the "Good Morning, Hebrew Home" television show, and most recently throwing a surprise St. Patrick's Day Party for his neighbors. A lifelong fan of baseball and the Great American Musical, Chip brought sheer verve, amazing grace, and a blessed day to all throughout his life. He is survived by his brother Michael Reis, Michael's partner Christina Daub, and their family, and by many dear relatives including Eileen and Aidan O'Reilly and Mary Ann Durkin and Kathleen Tole. A Holy Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Margaret of Cortona Catholic Church, in Riverdale, New York and burial followed at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. My memories of Chip go back many years. There were many times Chip would spend several days visiting with my wife, sons, and daughter. It was always such a pleasure to be around him. He took my second son under his wing and treated him as if they were brothers. Sadly my son passed away much too early at the age of forty five in 2003. Although we had lost track of Chip, we all thought of him often.
