Junior Toad, a.k.a. Mr. Too Cool
Our class had one
Of them, a Mr.
Too Cool. He had very wavy
brown hair and twinkling eyes.
He looked fair in pink oxford dress
shirts, and had stubble
Before the other boys could even
Produce downy mustache hair.
We knew so little
About him, but we supplied
Our own myths because that's
what's
Done when you have a legend
Among you. A green checkered
Woolrich
Jacket still hangs in my closet
because
David had a red one, and I think
When his father came to pick him up
after
Basketball practice, he had a pleated
jacket, too.
In the eighth grade Back to School
I remember, though, I got a look of
approval from
Mr. Too Cool. We never
contemplated whether he was
Lonely in the eighth grade or in the
twelfth
When his associates had moved far
away to the next building or
college or elsewhere. Some
Were unbearably superior, being one
year older
But there were some who were
simply older.
We can forget
We can say he wasn't one of us
But I can't forget that
There was a poem
In the school magazine
With his name below it.
Before I was even conscious
Of the consciousness of my peers.
It was called Junior Toad
And I ended up contemplating it
Long after we graduated.
Before we got to meet again.
You see, Junior Toad tried to be so
many other things
He took on the likenesses
Of other aniimals
But, eventually, at the end of the
medium-sized stanza
He realized that he was best at
Being himself.
The only other things I remember are
That his mother was kind
(She put one of my writings on the
family fridge.)
And I overheard him tell a classmate
in gym class that he had bone
condition in his knees
(An interesting fact when you took
someone to be perfect.)
But these things I didn't pick up
directly.
When he did talk to me,
I don't recall being any of those
mean things you might imagine.
Simply that he was Too Cool.
I drove him home once when
He didn't have a ride, imagine that.
In my dingy gray Chevrolet
After the Biology Achievement test
He was telling me that he felt
funny, he had lain on his arm
the night before.
Heading towards his porch,
Nonetheless
He waved goodbye with his
grin.
He was simply Too Cool--
That's why I didn't get to know him
then.
But you can guess
I changed my mind
Long ago
After reading his poem.

I went to High School with David at Friends School and just learned of his passing on Facebook today. I remember him as extremly outgoing guy, really friendly, and a great athlete. I was so saddended to hear of his passing. When I was in college a few years back I lost my boyfriend to Lymphoma, then after running a marathon for the Lymphoma society in his memory I was diagnosed with Lymphoma myself. For now I have won my battle, but always feel so sad for those that don't. There are no words to take away any of the pain of lossing a loved one. I just wanted to let you know you are in my thoughts and prayers. - Rebecca Parsons -Friends School class of 1991.

Liza, Eli, Reed, Elaine, Wex and all of David's family,
I am so, so very sorry about the loss of David. What a great testimony of strength, courage and determination. Liza, I followed David's progress through your dad. We have been and will continue to pray fo your entire family. Like everyone, words just don't come to convey my sympathy. I pray the Lord will hold you in the palm of His hand during these most difficult and trying of times.
