Regrettably, I just recently found out that my old Dean, Colleague and very good friend passed away back in January. There will never be enough words to say about Dr. Chunn as he was so very instrumental in my career starting at Howard University School of Social Work and beyond. Jay was a trailblazer and man of impecable character who just did everything RIGHT! His contributions to the field of Social Work and beyond will long live his legacy. So, to a great friend and colleague may you rest in Almighty God's eternal peace and may the perpetual light shine on your soul forever and ever AMEN!

My Dearest Jay Chunn:

You were an incredible source of support and inspiration in my life!!! When there was a change in my scholarship at Howard YOU told me there is a way out of no way and you sent me to Mr. Blackwell. You asked him to help me. You directed me on the path of administration, you guided me on advice rearing my son. I could go on and on and on. Thank you for believing in me!!!!! And now you will see your best work done in all of those you have left behind. I will love you, cherish you, and live in the manner you would have wanted for me!!!!

Dr. Jay Chunn was my advisor when I was in the MSW Program at Howard University. He let me know that he believed in me and encouraged me to continue my education and to become a social work educator. He had a profound impact on my professional life. And, we stayed connected over the years. I miss Dr. Chunn, but I have many wonderful memories and they include valuable lessons that I will pass on to others. Dr. Rowena G. Wilson

I miss you everyday. Thank you for being the most wonderful father. I will love you until the end of time.

Love Always,
"Baby girl"

A poem in loving memory of Daddy--

"Isn't She Lovely" is the first song I heard

You sang it, announcing my birth in this world

From the minute I got here, you never left my side

You vowed to love me, protect, and provide

I am so blessed that I had a father like you

You guided my steps and lead me through

Now I vow to make you proud in everything that I do

As I walk in my 25th year in a world without you here

I realize that you will never leave me

You are my angel and in the very air I breathe

You truly were the best dad and my best friend

Please save me a seat next to you in heaven.

Chunn Family
I am Ceil's friend from Cleveland. My prayer for your family: Jesus, you are the God of all comfort. You understand all the emotions of grief that others don't always understand. You are always ready to listen when others are tied up. You understand the silence that grief oftentimes brings; yet you are able to interpret the silence. Jesus, you are a healer and I ask that you heal the sadness that grief brings. I ask that you remind them that Ecclesiastes states that there is a season for everything. This season in time will transition to a different season in their lives and you will be faithful to be in transition with them. Lord and Comforter, guide this family today and in the days to come. In Jesus name, Amen.

I knew Jay for more than forty years, going back to when I was a much younger, developing social work educator. Jay was one of the many who up close and from afar, helped shaped who I would become as an educator. He will always be fondly regarded for the manner in which he advised me and warmly welcomed me to Washington,DC as president of UDC. Jay you will always be missed and warmly regarded.

Dr. Chunn was a great man, a great professor, a father figure, and a great motivator. One of his favorite phrases was "colleagues, let's get this done". As his former student he spoke passionately about the importance of "transformational leadership" and "collaboration" in urban social work and community development. Truly, he reflected those qualities and he will be dearly missed. May God grant his soul eternal peace.

I will always remember Jay with great fondness. In the 80s, I was working for an agency which got a federal grant which required the heads of each discipline to have a university appointment. Having only an MSW at the time, I felt I was about to kiss my good job goodbye. Jay hired me to teach the Child Therapy Class at the Howard University School of Social Work, thereby giving me a university appointment, allowing me to keep my good job, and initiating me into social work education.

Our lives intersected at Howard University School of Social Work, and the National Association of Black Social Workers. He contributed so much to the world. May he rest in peace.

So hard to say goodbye to a dear friend and mentor whom I have known since 1996 during my years matriculating at Morgan State University. Dr. Chunn was an amazing person with such an illustrious career. We kept in touch over the years and he even came to my Wedding in 2002 and later met my children. He always saw the very best in me, was very proud of my career accomplishments, and encouraged me to shoot for the stars both academically and professionally. He loved Jannette dearly and loved, admired, and was extremely proud of all of his children. I feel as though I know Lauren since he often talked about her more recent accomplishments. He wore the Superman ā€œSā€ charm with shear pride that his children gave him one year, I believe for Father's Day. Dr. Chunn and Jannette were extremely supportive of me when I lost my father in 2010. He showered a little paternal support my way, in the absence of my father, when I needed it. And now, Dr. Chunn, here we are saying goodbye to you...
My deepest sympathy and condolences to Jannette, the Chunn children, and other family for your loss. May God comfort you at this time of bereavement.
ā€œI will truly miss you, Dr. Chunn and will always be grateful for you.ā€

Dr. Jay Carrington Chunn was one of Morgan State University's distinguished 20th and 21st century educators. I was pleased to call him my colleague and my friend during his many years with us. Somehow, Morgan will not be the same without him. The absence of his voice and his smile, his intellect and his wisdom, his wit and his humor, will leave a great void in our lives. I am so grateful for the opportunity that I had to work with him and to share many laughs.

Rest in peace, My Friend!
