John Doak Obituary

John Hunt Doak, 83, has passed away after suffering complications from a stroke. Born 11/27/41 in Columbus, MS, he spent his childhood in Shelbyville, KY, before attending Phillips Academy Andover (class of '60) and then Harvard University (class of '64). He began his career at Black & Decker in Towson, then moved to Easco Hand Tools and Danaher Corp., where he retired early at age 45. A gifted engineer and self-taught master mechanic, he spent the following years developing and building (in his garage) a revolutionary ambulatory medical table designed for military use. The Doak Table™, named in honor of his father, a doctor who served in WWII, is now used in military operations worldwide. One of his tables is carried on Air Force One at all times. He was devoted to his beloved wife, Ann Connor Doak, for 55 years until she died in 2017. Together, they had two children, son Brian Connor Doak and daughter Stefanie Doak Frank, and five grandchildren. Brilliant, funny, generous, and affectionate, he leaves a massive void in the lives of the many family and friends who adored him. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Redeemer on Friday, Jan. 31, at 11 am, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
