Mary Hopkins Obituary
Mary Eloise Bridget Hopkins was born in Baltimore, MD on November 15, 1926, to James A. Spriggs, Sr and Madeline M. Barnes Spriggs, the third of ten children. She departed this life on Friday, May 27, 2022, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was blessed to be 95 years old.
Mary, who went by Eloise, attended St. Peter Clever Parochial School and St. Frances Academy High School, MD. She earned a business degree from Cortez Peters Business School, Baltimore, MD. She was employed in the Civilian Personnel office, Edgewood Area/Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, as a Personnel Management Specialist. She retired in 1981 with 33 years of service.
Eloise was united in holy matrimony on September 19, 1948, to Clarence E. Hopkins, Sr. a union which lasted 55 years. In this union they were blessed with four sons, Clarence E. Hopkins, Edward W. Hopkins, Charles Bernard Hopkins and Philip M. Hopkins.
Eloise was very active in the Legion of Mary at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, Bel Air MD for over 30 yrs. Her church family was her second family. She was active in visiting and reading to those in the hospital, she enjoyed gardening, eating a wonderful seafood meal and spending time with family and friends. She liked walks at the Hartford mall and seemed to always be on the move. She enjoyed playing 500 with her siblings, Marie, John and Dennis.
Eloise moved from Bel Air, MD to Jacksonville, FL in October 2018 to be nearer to her son Clarence and brother Dennis for easier support. Eloise being Eloise, picked up where she left off in Maryland, participating in church activities at her senior living residence and attending the
Christ The King Catholic Church and engaging in activities regarding the Legion of Mary at her residence in Jacksonville, FL.
She leaves to cherish her life and memory two daughters-in-law, Lori Hopkins (Charles Bernard Hopkins) and Diana Hopkins (Phillip Hopkins); grandchildren, Kevin Thomas, Dawn Higgins, Jamie Hopkins, Christopher Hopkins, Gabriela Hopkins, Michael and Jalyn Hopkins and a host of great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Clarence E. Hopkins Sr.; her parents, James and Madeline Spriggs; Siblings, Catherine Darden, (husband Carl Darden deceased); Doris Gibson; and James Spriggs Jr. (wife, Mary Spriggs deceased), Daughter-in-Law Gloriana Hopkins deceased (Edward Hopkins).
Eloise is survived by her sons Clarence Hopkins Jr.; Edward Hopkins, Bernard Hopkins; Phillip Hopkins along with her sisters, Marie M. Weaver (Jefferson Weaver deceased); Geneva E. Pope (Ollie Pope Sr. deceased), Theresa S. Jackson (husband Durce Jackson), and Anne L Jackson (Brutus Jackson deceased). Two brothers John A Spriggs (Beverly Spriggs), Dennis B Spriggs; many cousins and nephew on both sides of the family.
Family and friends will honor and celebrate Eloise's life at the Evans Life Celebration Home-Bel Air, 3 Newport Drive (Rt. 23 & Rt. 24), Forest Hill on Friday, June 10, 2022, from 4-7 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, 141 N Hickory Ave, Bel Air, MD 21014 on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. Interment St. Ignatius Church Cemetery.
