Matthew Osborne Obituary

Matthew Hayes Osborne, 43, of Annapolis, MD and Boulder, CO, died on May 15, 2020. Born in Howard County, Matt was a 1996 "Baker's Dozen" graduate of McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD. Matt attended the school for 13 years. There, he was an agile wrestler, a fierce long-stick lacrosse defender and a respected football captain.

Matt was a dean's list student at Virginia Tech. Following graduation, he attended the University of Maryland Francis S. Carey School of Law. During this time, Matt reconnected with his preschool classmate, Heather McManus. Heather became the love of his life, and the two married in January, 2002.

As a member of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Colorado State Bar Associations, Matt provided pro bono advocacy for the sick, the marginalized and children. In the last years of his life, Matt admirably devoted himself to addiction recovery. While in treatment, he forged lasting friendships. He spent hours on the phone and traveled many miles to support friends in need. Yet the relationships Matt treasured most were with his beloved family. Fatherhood was the greatest joy of his life. From sidelines to fieldtrips, Matt was enthusiastically involved in all aspects of his children's lives. He volunteered as a baseball and lacrosse coach, and will forever be a happy part of many childhood memories.

Matt is survived by his children: Annabelle, Hamish, Scarlett, Christine and Drew, and their mother, Heather. Matthew's mother, Christine (Clugage) Osborne, siblings Andrew (Rachel Elsea) Osborne, Jennifer Burke (Michael), and a tribe of nieces and nephews are grateful for the light Matt brought to their lives. An aunt, Kristin Rohr, and hundreds of friends who cared deeply for him, were of special importance. Matt was preceded in death by his father and best friend, Hamish S. Osborne, in 2016.

The Osborne family wishes to thank the friends and professionals who cared for Matthew along the way. In lieu of flowers, donations in Matt's honor can be made to the Peninsula Athletic League. https://www.palannapolis.com

Hi Friends and Family
This is Jennie, Matts sister. First of all, Im having a hard time using punctuation on this app...please forgive the typos!
I wanted to share just a quick bit, and a photo, that reflect Matts vitality, energy, and joy of living. I shared my life with Matt until he was 12 years old at our childhood home until I left for college. Matt was the darling of our babysitters, and he was a complete daredevil. He was an incredible skier and we spent our weekend days together with our family on the mountain at Wisp. They were wonderful days of nonstop energy and play. In the summers, we were outside all day at Deep Creek too. We would water ski and swim and boat all day, then play Capture the Flag with our neighbors at night. Matt never rested. He was always up for fun. He was a little naughty too...throwing smoke bombs, riding the dog, sledding the stairs...in my mind I can hear Miss Casey constantly asking Mattsie, are you alright?! following some kind of clatter or boom.
After college, I married my husband Mike, who is a veteran. We moved around quite a bit, but seeing my brothers was always the highlight of a trip home. They both had great humor, and there was always music, fun, food, laughter, and something to do outside usually. My parents were entirely generous too. I was often homesick for my family. Happy times!
Matt and I moved to Annapolis in the same week in 2007. It was a lot of fun to be in the same town. Matt and Heather were our closest friends. Matt and I coached a lacrosse team together. The girls loved Coach Matt! Weekend days were spent around a fire pit in the Osbornes front yard in Eastport. Matt and Heather were so generous, and they had an open door policy. We often brought friends and Mids to their place to hang out. Matt was a terrific cook, host and entertainer. There was always an abundance of food and fun when he and Heather hosted. Matt was also a really involved attorney in Annapolis. He was trusted. His friends sought his help and he was always available. He was also super active and healthy during this time. He was part of a 5am Boot Camp...he was solid as a rock, and super strong. He was a great role model of health for the little ones that he coached in Baseball. He made very close friends in Boot Camp and through coaching. He made friends everywhere he went!
I have so many happy memories of my sweet brother. He was so very sensitive and kind. He loved animals and meaningful music. He adored his children and Heather. Oh my goodness, our parents. He loved them. LOVED. He loved our entire family. And his friends. They were right up there with family, especially Brad Mac and his buddies from VT.
Matt was a wonderful, generous, kind, loving, devoted human being. I am entirely proud of his journey. I view his battle won, and we, those who loved him, are left to face the ruins on his battlefield. Matt, I remember you as an angel on this earth, so I know you now, my brother. I love you.

Knew Matt only 8 years or so. And only as a little kid. Very moved by what Im learning; astounding all he was able to accomplish as a student, an athlete, a father; the many lives he touched, the good work he did helping others; What an amazing person. This is very sad news. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Dickie, Kelly, Boo, and Tim

'Matty O' was my co-worker and best friend out here in Colorado. He was slightly older than me and i looked up to him like an older brother. We shared a love for sports, the Grateful Dead, and humor. He was always laid-back and funny; always had a positive attitude, regardless of any situation; and was always calm and courteous to all the people that we encountered. He would do the best impressions of people and make us all laugh at work with his wit and funny delivery. He was one of a kind and will be sorely missed!

We raised our children as next door neighbors to Christy and Hamish and Matt and Jennifer and Andrew.
We have so many prescious and cherished memories of those years ... and the years beyond.
And we have been saddened by the loss of Hamish, way too early. We loved him.
And now this.
Words cannot possibly express how deeply saddened we are, Christy, for your loss of Matt.
Nor can words ever explain the why of this tragic loss.
Matt was a wonderful caring young man who brought light and smiles to many, wherever his presence and compassion was felt.
Throughout life, we are asked to bear crosses. And at times like this, they can feel far too heavy for us to carry. And we are asked to accept what we cannot understand. That acceptance is part of the heavy cross. As are the many tears that are shed.
Our hearts ache for you.
Right at this moment, we cannot imagine how you will find solace. But over time, we pray that peace and fond memories will at least partially fill the void. And that you will find the strength needed to move forward.
We hope that your knowing that so many love you may help, if only a bit.
We look forward to hugging you when we can meet again.
In the meantime, please know that will be holding you and your family in our hearts and prayers ... every day going forward.
Love ❤ you. Lucille and Jack

Colby Johnson, my son, introduced me to Matt. My wife, Linda, and I invited him to our DerbyDay event at MTR where he and Heather were most generous. Matt invited me to play golf in The Osbornes Jackalope Invitational where I played with his dad. What a great time and what a great dad. I regret not actually having played a game of golf with Matt. Matt has been in my thoughts often over the years and he will be sorely missed by many.

I recall nannying for your children and how excited they would get when Matt walked in the door. His face just lit up and his smile could light up the world.
You and Heather would always make me feel like family in many many ways. Thank you for sharing your life with me Matt. You made my years with your family very special. Miss you and love you

My wife Rhonda And myself Colby truly loved Matt. He was always the fun guy to hang out with and he always made sure we were having fun. My father, Bart Johnson invited him to the Derby Day fundraiser at Maryland Therapeutic Riding with his bride Heather. Matt and Heather were so generous with there donations to help such a great cause because thats the kind of people they are.
Matts death puts a huge hole in our hearts, and everyone he has touched. Especially his wonderful children. We must remember all the wonderful things Matt has done for friends, and family. Matt was always there to stand up for someones rights and just to be there as a friend. I will forever miss him. I am so thankful for the chance and opportunity to know him, Heather, Annabel, Hamish, Scarlett, Christine, and Drew. What a wonderful family and will always cherish our memories.
