Paul Butler Obituary

On Friday, May 09, 2025 Paul Rigdon Butler Sr. (Buddy) passed away quietly in his sleep. For many years he was a devoted and selfless caregiver for his wife, "Tillie" (Matilda Butler) who died six months prior. To those who knew him, it was obvious, he died of a broken heart. We are grateful knowing he has joined his loving wife once again.

Buddy Butler was born in Cardiff, Maryland on February 12, 1934. He was the son of Paul John Butler and Helen Rigdon Butler. He loved to recount stories and details of growing up in the small town and fondly described life with his mother and sister. There were stories about playing on the slate piles, riding his pony to visit friends, walking to school, WWII, working at Whiteford Packing Company, and as a student in the second class to graduate from the "new" North Harford High School.

Buddy joined the United States Army in 1954 and served in occupied Germany during the Korean conflict. After an honorable discharge, he attended college at the University of Maryland and eventually transferred to Salisbury State Teachers College. There, the well rounded student athlete met the love of his life, Matilda Worthington. Buddy and Tillie were married on July 12, 1958. After a brief teaching stint in Harford County, Buddy was employed by the Federal government and worked at several locations, ultimately retiring as a Personnel Branch Chief at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1989.

Buddy and Tillie raised their children Kristin, Lynn and Paul in Street, Maryland. There they had many friends, a menagerie of stray dogs and cats, fond memories of camping trips, and Sunday dinners with extended family. They were very involved with Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church where Buddy served several terms as an Elder. Buddy was a well-spoken and intelligent man interested in history and geography. Until his last day he was up to date on current news and world events which he enjoyed discussing with anyone who was interested. He liked playing golf, landscaping, reading and watching sports.

In retirement, Buddy and Tillie lived in Ocean City, Maryland. They enjoyed the ocean and summer visitors. They were thrilled to become grandparents and were then forever known as Nana and Pappy. Family gatherings were always special and having all their children, grandchildren and great-children around was the highlight of their last years.

Buddy is predeceased in death by his wife of 66 years, Tillie, his sister, Madelyn Potter, his brother in laws, Walt Potter and Lane Worthington, and his niece, Carolyn Helmcamp.

He is survived by the following: Daughter Kristin Baker (Adrian) of Chestertown, MD and their children Grace Giannaras (Billy) and Madelyn Coats (Kyle). Daughter Lynn Crofton (Andy) of Fallston, MD and their children, Lucas Crofton, Sydney Glock (Jack) and Lane Crofton. Son, Paul R Butler Jr. of Aberdeen, MD. Great Grandchildren, Jane Giannaras, Frankie Giannaras and Eden Glock also survive their "Pappy," and lastly, nephews, Steve and Jeff Potter.

Paul (Buddy) requested that upon his death there would be no formal service, that his remains would be donated for medical research/education and subsequent cremation. Memory donations may be made to Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church 1630 Chestnut Street, Whiteford, MD 21160, or to a favorite charity.
