Paul Chang Obituary

Dr. Paul Jongwan Chang, 88, beloved doctor and devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 14, 1927 to Sae Kyun Chang and Juk Juk Hong Chang in Seoul, South Korea. A resident of Severna Park for over 43 years, Dr. Chang was a General Surgeon and General Medical Practitioner in the area for 35 years. He performed the first surgery at North Arundel Hospital (now University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center) over 50 years ago, and was one of the founding members of the hospital staff. Dr. Chang treated anyone regardless of their ability to pay. He retired in 1996. Dr. Chang graduated from Posung High School, Severance Medical College, and Yonsei University Medical School in Seoul, Korea. During the Korean War, he worked as a civilian doctor at the United Nations 14th Field Hospital in Puson. He emigrated to the United States in 1953 with the help of Roman Catholic Archbishop Paul Roh. He was assigned to St. Mary's Memorial Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was Chief Resident in Surgery at Lutheran Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He had surgical privileges at Lutheran Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, North Charles General Hospital, and North Arundel Hospital. He was an active member of the American Medical Association, Korean Medical Association of America, Anne Arundel County Medical Society and the Yonsei University Medical School Alumni Association. Dr. Chang and his wife Jackie traveled to over 50 countries throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East and sailed on the QE2 and the Queen Mary. Their most memorable destinations included The Vatican, where they were granted an audience with the Pope, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the Berlin Wall, the Great Wall of China, the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem, across Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railroad, and to the World Cup and the Olympics in Seoul. They spent a week in Mongolia living in a ger and visiting the Yonsei Friendship Hospital. Their favorite trips were those taken with each of their four grandchildren on grand tours of Europe. Dr. Chang loved taking videos of family events, watching football, listening to classical music, and most of all spending time with his family. Dr. Chang is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Jacqueline Ann Chang, his daughters Lisa Chang Malone and husband Steve of West Palm Beach, Florida, Ellen Chang Kumm and husband John of Millersville, Maryland, and his four grandchildren Natalie, Christian, Miles and Hillary.
