Rafael Marin Obituary

Dr. Rafael H. Marin of North Truro, MA passed away peacefully on August 3, 2019 in Hyannis, MA, surrounded by his loving family. He was deeply respected, admired and loved by many, as he devoted his life to the care of others through his decades of medical practice and, later in life, to the care of his beloved wife, Barbara.

Dr. Marin was born on September 17, 1933 in La Serena, Chile, the second of five children of Humberto Marin and Ines Naranjo de Marin. After completing his studies at the Colegio Seminario Conciliar in La Serena, he traveled to Cochabamba, Bolivia to study medicine at Universidad Mayor de San Simon. In 1963, he came to the United States to complete his medical residency at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD, after which he opened his practice in internal medicine at the Pine Heights Medical Center. He continued his affiliation with St. Agnes Hospital in many capacities, including running the outpatient clinic and teaching medical residents. Dr. Marin was a gifted healer and diagnostician, caring for thousands of patients from the greater Baltimore area and within Maryland's Catholic community. Helping his patients through tender care and detailed scientific inquiry was his passion. In 2001, he retired from medicine and moved to Cape Cod, MA to enjoy a quiet life with his wife.

In addition to his love of science and medicine, he enjoyed Argentine tango music, Premier League and European football, fine food and wine, history and literature, classic movies, and hosting his family on Cape Cod.

Dr. Marin is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (McKniff) Marin of North Truro, MA; sisters Margarita Eugenia Marin Naranjo, Carmen Cecilia Marin Naranjo and Olga Beatriz Marin Naranjo of La Serena, Chile; daughters from his first marriage Margarita Beatriz Marin-Dale of Herndon, VA, Maria-Eugenia Cecilia Marin of Madrid, Spain, Monica Patricia Marin of Fayetteville, PA, Maria-Ximena Veronica Marin of Los Angeles, CA, and Maria-Ines del Pilar Marin Dillingham of Roanoke, TX; daughter Barbara A. Marin of Houston, TX; step-son Frank J. Ruehl III of Baltimore, MD; and twelve wonderful grandchildren.

A memorial Mass in his honor is being held at the Cathedral of La Serena, Chile on August 6, 2019. Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

I have many fond memories of my dear friend Raphael. We worked together at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore, MD for 30 years taking care of mutual patients. I also remember Raphael for having many cultural interests. For example he shared with me arias from some of his favorite operas, recommending they be listened to with a glass of good wine. Enclosed is a photo of the internal medicine residents and faculty Teaching staff at St. Agnes Hospital 1977. Dr. Marin is to the right in second row.
