Sarah Fields Obituary

On Monday, August 30th, Sarah Elizabeth Fields passed away at the age of 71. Sarah was the youngest of four children and was born at home in Busy, Kentucky on September 11th, 1949. Although she and her family moved to Maryland in 1963, she never lost her Kentucky accent, despite her best efforts. Sarah attended high school in Cecil County, Maryland, and then college at the University of Maryland College Park. She was a staunch supporter of Maryland basketball, despite the tension this created with her older sister Barbara, a University of Kentucky alum. After graduating from college, Sarah moved to North Carolina, where she earned a master's degree at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and then returned to Maryland to teach. In 1981, Sarah married Bruce Wallace, and the following year, they had a daughter, Eliza Wallace. Sarah taught reading at Bakersfield Elementary, and later taught English at Havre de Grace High School (HHS) for more than 30 years. She particularly liked to teach Shakespeare. During her tenure at HHS, Sarah earned a second master's degree at Johns Hopkins University. Sarah loved reading gruesome murder mystery books, line dancing, listening to Elvis, and watching British television series. She spent much of her time traveling during her summers and after her retirement in 2005. She and her husband Bruce traveled the world, seeing places from France, to China, to South Africa, to Peru. In her travels she has kissed a giraffe, ridden a camel, and danced with strangers in the street on several continents. Sarah was preceded in death by her brother Preston. She is survived by her husband Bruce Wallace, their daughter Eliza Wallace, and two sisters Barbara and Alberta. No memorial service is planned at this time, but donations may be sent in her name to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
