Stanley Block Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, dentist, and avid golfer Dr. Stanley Earle Block passed away on August 13, 2024, with his wife of 68 years, Frances Charlow Block, by his side.

Stan was born on December 1, 1932, to parents Jeanne and Manny Block. Together with his sister Lorraine, they lived in Pimlico. He went to City College and then the University of Maryland where he met Fran. The two married July 18, 1956. Stan followed in his Uncle Phil's footsteps attending the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD), graduating in 1958. He served in the U.S. Air Force for two years as a dentist on a base in McAllen, TX, where Joanne was born. Stan moved his family to Annapolis to open a dental practice, where their children Shelley and Larry were born. Many memories were made in Admiral Heights, at Kneseth Israel, and in the Eastport dental office where Fran served as the office manager and Joanne joined the practice as a dentist.

Being a dentist was not just a job but a lifelong passion for Stan. He served as President of the Maryland State Dental Association from 1995 to 1996, taught at UMSOD, gave boards all over the country, and even had a scholarship created in honor of the three-generation Block UMSOD dynasty to further others' careers.

Stan was blessed to see six grandchildren grow to adulthood: Erika, Jennifer, Colin, Austin, Jordan, and Jeremy. They loved spending time over the years in Annapolis and Baltimore, and cherished the Bar and Bat Mitzvah trips they each went on with him and Fran.

Stan is survived by his wife, Frances (Fran) Charlow Block; his children, Dr. Joanne (Marshall) Rief, Shelley (Newt) Fowler, and Larry (Lisa) Block; his grandchildren, Erika (Jon) Hornstein, Jennifer Fowler, Dr. Colin Fowler, Austin (Talia Schwartz) Rief, Jordan Block (fiance Melissa Polin), and Jeremy Block; his great-grandchildren, Dalia Hornstein and Idan Hornstein; his brother-in-law, Richard Rose; and his sister-in-law, Miriam Charlow. He is predeceased by his parents, Jeanne and Manny Block; his sister, Lorraine Rose; and his brother-in-law, Stanley Charlow.
