Wilbert Travers Obituary

Col. Wilbert "Red" Thomas Travers, Jr. Maryland State Police (Ret.) of White Hall, MD, died Sunday at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. He was 79. The son of Wilbert Thomas Travers, Sr. and Marguerite Mary Travers (Scanlon), Red was born November 16, 1934 in Baltimore, MD. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1953, and then began a distinguished career in law enforcement when he graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy in 1957. He held every rank in the organization, bypassing the rank Lt. Colonel, before being appointed Superintendent in 1982. In the years following his retirement from the state police in 1985, he owned a private security business and he was frequently called upon to offer his expertise in criminal cases. At the time of his passing, he had been employed at Smith Hardware in Jarrettsville, MD for more than 13 years, where he took great pleasure from helping others while indulging a life-long passion for carpentry, woodworking and hardware. Red was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters, a great-granddaughter and his first wife, Patricia Lee Travers (Patterson). He leaves behind his wife, Terry A. Travers (Minton); step-daughter Nicole Minton; son Timothy Travers and his wife, Sheila of Brick, NJ; daughter Kelley Goldsmith and her husband Herb of Bastrop, TX; son Shannon Travers and his wife Andrea of Abingdon, MD; daughter Kerry Hubbard and her husband Richard of Charlotte, NC; and son Col. Casey Travers, USMC and his wife Stephanie of Stafford, VA; as well as 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, much-loved extended family and many dear friends. At Red's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Father Martin's Ashley, 800 Tydings Lane, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.

Col. Travers you will definitely be missed! I always knew when you were scheduled for an appointment that I was in for some fun. From the first day I met you, you were the nicest person, ornery as anything and very truly Triple Trouble like you told me. Thanking God that I was blessed with meeting you! R.I.P Colonel.

Lt. Colonel (retired) Steve Chaney

Our deepest condolences to your family at the loss of a great husband, father and friend. Red, I'll miss you, in general, but especially at the Jarrettsville Carnival where we worked the "soda shop" every year. And, every time I go into Ace, I'll look for you. May you rest in peace, my friend.

He was Colonel to some, Red to others but always Dad to me. He and I had a great relationship. We talked politics and always enjoyed seeing trains either at the museums or on a Christmad Garden. Over the past few years I was taking him and Sam to Rock Hall for his MSP Academy Class reunion. Quality time spent with him. Dad, may you rest in peace until we are together again. I love and miss you.

I will miss my dear friend Red Travers, as will many in our community. He served his community in many ways, through his long career at the Maryland State Police and the Jarrettsville Lions Club to name a few. More recently, he had been the friendly face at Smith Hardware in Jarrettsville. Anyone who knew Red will remember him for driving bright red cars and usually wearing a red shirt. It's shocking that he has passed, we just enjoyed crabs together at the Lions Club annual crab feast at Clear Meadow Farm just nine days ago, and he looked great! My thoughts and prayers are with his family and many friends during this difficult time, may he rest in peace.

He will be missed by many. Red had a story to tell and his experience has touched many more lost souls than anyone will ever know. He had a passion for what he believed in. I admire that about him and will miss him dearly
