Barbara Ann Hawthorne, age 68, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, February 20, 2016. She was born February 16, 1948 in Monroe, Wisconsin the daughter of Duane Melvin and Margaret K. (Krahenbuhl) Hawthorne. Barbara earned an Associate Degree in Computer Science, a Bachelor Degree in Education, and taught special education in Illinois for ten years. She moved to Battle Creek in 1984 and worked at the Kellogg Company for more than 20 years. During the 1960s she was a VISTA volunteer in Alabama.

She is survived by two brothers: Richard (Penny) Hawthorne and David (Kathy) Hawthorne; seven nieces and nephews: Cassandra (Jeff) Baer and their children Julilla and Mary Cate; Laura Hawthorne; Nathan (Shelly) Hawthorne and their children William, Ella, and Tessa; Dan (Maia) Hawthorne and their children Margot and Sylvia; Patrick (Cari) Hawthorne; Josh Hawthorne; Emerson Hawthorne; and two special grandchildren: Abigail and Juliana Koph.

In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 at First Assembly of God, 800 South 24th Street, Battle Creek, MI 49015. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Unity Christian Church of Battle Creek or the Barn Theatre. www.henryfuneralhome.org

Barbara was one of our most wonderful customers at Apple Valley Natural Health Food Store in BC. She always had a great big smile on her face and something really nice to say! On Monday I learned of her death from a co-worker and started crying; I couldn't believe she was gone, having talked and laughed with her only a week ago! She will be deeply missed by all of us and I am so sorry for her family and friends due to the senselessness of her death. Her life was so meaningful at that is what matters the most! God bless Barbara's family.
