Alice Hingston Gillespie died on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the age of 90. She was born to Irish immigrants, John Joseph and Kate Ann Hingston, on July 9, 1923. A woman of strong faith, devoted to serving others, Alice will be missed and remembered for her kindness, encouragement, and guidance to friends, students, and acquaintances throughout her life.
Alice graduated from Brookline High School in Brookline, MA at the age of sixteen. In 1943, she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commercial Education from Boston University, where she was president of her Zeta Chi Delta sorority. She married Warren Gillespie, Jr. of Houston at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Brookline, MA on June 21, 1947, following completion of his Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT.
She later completed her Master's Degree in Education from the University of Houston and earned her Counseling Certificate. She was a Texas Board Certified Licensed Counselor. She taught high school business courses in Hampton Beach, NH; Westboro, MA; and Hampton, VA, as well as accounting at Texas Christian University post WWII. Alice served as guidance counselor for the Houston High School for Health Professions and for Friendswood High School.
Alice was a founding member of the Bay Area Counselors' Association and of the Friendswood Fun Walkers. A "cradle" Episcopalian, she was a longtime parishioner of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church of Friendswood, serving as a Daughter of the King and as a founding member of the church's Shepherd's Nook Thrift Shop. She thoroughly loved square dancing with her friends of the Friendswood Hangar Squares. She also served on the board of the Friendswood PTA and was a member of the American Association of University Women.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, of 55 years.
She is survived by her three sons: Warren Gillespie and wife, Sherry, John Gillespie and wife, Barbara, Bill Gillespie and wife, Mary; grandchildren: Julie, Sarah, Andrew, Elizabeth, Amanda, and David; great grandchildren: Sheridan, Savannah, Leighton, Connor, and Simon.
Friends are invited to the visitation with the family on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546 (281) 992-7200.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 1207 Winding Way, Friendswood, TX 77546 with The Rev. Geoffrey Gwynne and Pastor Fred Dallas officiating, with a reception to follow. Interment will follow at 2:00 P.M. at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery, 1101 Antoine Dr., Houston, TX.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church Building Fund, 1207 Winding Way, Friendswood, TX 77546.
