Herbert G. Newell, known as Herb by family and friends, passed from this life at the age of 85, on March 16, 2014. He was a resident of Friendswood for 46 yrs. Herb was born August 19, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Herbert W. and June Hatter Newell. Herb grew up in Ft. Wayne/ Huntington, Indiana where he graduated from High School in 1946. Upon graduation, Herb enlisted in The United States Army Air Corps and proudly served his country for 13 years as a flight engineer. Herb learned to fly airplanes while serving his country and carried his ragged and faded pilot's license in his wallet until his death. Herb met his wife Rose Hermes while stationed at Foster Field in Victoria, Texas. Herb and Rose were blessed with two children Cathy and Carl and settled in Friendswood in 1968. Herb was a charter member of Mary Queen Catholic Church; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8494 and was a 25 year life 4th Degree Knight in Assembly 2084. Herb retired from General Electric after 25 plus years of service. Herb loved his family, his church, The Knights of Columbus and his country. Each morning he would put out his American flag, stand back and salute it. Herb was an avid bowler and also enjoyed supporting his local Houston sports teams.
Herb was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rose; son, Carl; father, Herbert W. Newell; mother, June Newell Huston; brothers, Bill Newell and David Newell; sister, Margaret Baker.
He is survived by daughter, Cathy and husband Kevin Croft; granddaughters, Emily and Amanda Croft; special friend, Marlene Caraway; brothers, Richard Newell, Jim Newell, and Jerry Newell and Robert Mc Kinley; sisters, June Teusch and Pat PfLantz.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with the Vigil and Rosary to begin at 7:00 P.M. at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546 with the Knights of Columbus of Mary Queen Catholic Church #8494 officiating.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Mary Queen Catholic Church, 606 Cedarwood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546 with Rev. James Kuczynski, M.S. officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson, TX.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association for the Houston and Southeast Texas Chapter at www.alz.org or 2242 W. Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX 77030-2008.
